I got an AV-48WP74 projection tv and the convergence IC's werre upgraded from STK392-110 to STK392-150 and several of the resistors on the convergence board were bad. I need to know what to upgrade the...

The value of the resistors should not be changed (either resistance or wattage) as their job is to self destruct if one of the chips shorts.

It is very unusual in this set to see more than two of the resistors bad.

FYI: the 150 chip is a higher current device but will have no longer life than the original as the problem is that the heat sink grease drys out and this causes the failure.

The original resistors are metal oxide type and flameproof or carbon resistors should not be used to replace them.

Let me know if you have questions.

Double imagery, with a yellow bow at the top and bottom,

Look at attached photos and tell me if they look anything like your problem.

Convergence problems are common, this set most likely uses two of the STK-392-150 CHIPS (attached photo of typical chips) and they are 2.5 inches wide and about 1.5 inches tall with 18 pins each. They are mounted to heat sinks with fins and a white heat sink grease is applied to the back of each chip (back is metal) to transfer heat quickly.

After 5-8 years the grease dries out and one of the chips overheats and fails.

This can be a do it yourself repair and if purchased on EBAY a pair of the chips will cost less than 15 dollars (I use a seller there).

Repair consists of getting at chips and replacing them--sometimes they will damage a resistor around them--easy to spot and the resistors are easy to test.

Under 25 dollars total parts cost.

I can assist anyone with this repair and have done hundreds of them myself---based on actual experience I know what to do here.

if the photos or this information told you something you did not know rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

5dfd70f.jpgThese are the STK-392-150 CHIPS AND IF 393-110 IN SET THESE ARE REPLACEMENT THAT LASTS LONGER--THESE CAME FROM EBAY.

My color convergence for my red is off on the bottom left and the top right of my screen this is probably a ics problem can i fix this myself and what would be the cost

LOOK at your other question about this, I did answer it.

Total parts cost will be under 30 dollars. I need to know if you can solder and if I tell you how to get at the chips replace them.

This set also has some resistors that protect the chips----easy to test and cheap to replace..

Confirm actual model number and I am prepared to give you specific instructions.

You can reply to this solution or if you repost the question: attention SD TECH.

I bougth stk392-120 ic's want to know the resistors i need to change 6.8ohm but Watts?

They are 1/2 watt---and located to the left and in front of the forward STK-392-120 CHIP.

Do you know the best way to get at them?

This set has a "service position" it allows the most easy way to get at the chips and resistors.

The resistors are listed as 1 watt but actually are 1/2 watt flameproof ones.

If you want I can tell you the best way to get at them and also after how to use the ORIGINAL Philips remote to fine adjust the convergence in the TECH menu---that way the adjustments will be saved into the set's memory--adjusting in the customer menu will work but will not save the adjustments.

If this information helps you, rate this solution as I do this here for free.

If you need help or advice let me know.

My 2003 60pp9202/17 Projection can not sync red

If you went into the customer menu and red is skewed or warped etc and will not adjust it is not the Glycol or a comb filter.

This model uses two of the STK-392-120 CONVERGENCE IC's---if convergence problem--you will need to replace both of them and any of the 6.8 ohm protect resistors around them that are bad.

If you remove the back (unplug the set first) as you look from the back the large board on the far left will have two large metal heat sinks with fins on its right side---the chips are on the left side of them.

Take a good look with a flashlight at all the little green resistors in front of the front one and to the left of it--there are three plugs there--these are the protect resistors--if any are white in the middle--you found your problem.

Half the time only two will be gone---sometimes none.

Parts cost for this repair if you can do it yourself is about 25 dollars or less----most shops get at least 300 for this repair and some do not do it in the home.

Glycol or a comb filter will not cause the red to be out of position---some people here know more than others--

If you have some skill at soldering I can tell you the best place to get the chips etc and how to get at them.

I don't think this set is worth the type of shop repair that is needed--unless you are able or know a friend who can help you--it may be time to let it go.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR WANT MORE INFORMATION OR ADVICE LET ME KNOW---

I am here to help people--sometimes I cannot give them good news but if red will not move you have a convergence problem.

Samsung rear projection tv smells

I would first suspect bad connections and/or a defective convergence IC. The burning is the current limiting resistors getting hot. I would stop using the set and get it repaired. Replacing the convergence ICs should have a pars cost in the $40-$60 range. The few resistors that should also be changed should only add a few $$ to the cost. Add in the local labor rate for the total repair cost. Also, request that the ICs be changed rather than the whole convergence board. It will be less expensive and won't require a complete convergence adjustment. Dan

Re: Thanks so much!!

If you can solder this is a repair you can do yourself for under 30 dollars. I can send instructions . Or if you'd like i can locate you someone in the richmond area if you post your zipcode. However a repair shop will probaly get 200- 300 for a convergence repair.

Does the repair & cost recommendation solve our problem?

I hope they are not your only repair shop around ,if i where you i would call another repair shop ,that is way to high for repair cost if they are only changing out (2) STK-392-110s, cost 90.00 also if they happen to be STK 392-560s the price of those are only10.00 differents also price of resistors at most 4.95- how much is bench labor?550.00 dollars wow!!!!! I think you were trying to say convergence chips if im right all the above is true. let me know if this is what they are telling you.I do this same job at my shop cost (2) stks 110.00 plus tax 8.80 plus labor if i do not run into hard time to realine 225.00 total cost 343.80

Pico means small and these look like little small resistors, but don't have stripes like resistors, just part numbers. They should measure as a dead short and be in the immediate vicinity of the STK's

most shops I know are crooked and make up stuff to squeez the most outta ya usually about half what the set costs. so are car mechanics. best thing to do is ask around for trusted repair shop .....word of mouth rules. any tech with half a brain can come to your house point to the parts within 1 minute...and should just charge a house call. good luck
