Power button doesn't turn on; device doesn't...

The reset process, described in an earlier question works, but it still will not turn on the way it's advertised - by using the power switch.
This issue reared it's ugly head the same time the device stopped downloading to the training center.
I have a MAC and I got all the recent updates for the device (the chip update) and the Training center. I have data from my first marathon that I'd hate to lose!

very frustrating for a device this expensive and not even a year old!
