I just had cable internet installed. I have 1 computer OS - XP Media Center Edition, The other computer OS Vista Premium Home Edition. I have a D-Link DI-704P residentual router and a April Cable Modem Model TM402G/110. The computers work fine independently on the modem but, neither can find the router. I spoke with Brighthouse and they told me I need to configure the router to get the appropriate IP addresses they don't know how to do it? Can anyone give a guy some help ?

Make sure that the cables are in the right place, computers should be connected to one of the 4 ethernet ports and the cable from the modem goes to the WAN port of the router, here's a picture, the WAN port is the closest one to the print server port.
If this is ok and still no internet than try to power down the router and the modem for a bit like 5-10 sec and put power back on, first the modem than the router, if this didn't help you out than you have to do some deeper configuration.
First you need to log in to the router while connected via cable to it. Open a web browser and type 192.168.0.1(it's the default ip address of the router), if it's not asking for username and password than start menu>run type in CMD and press enter, a DOS window will pop, type in IPCONFIG and press enter, the command's output will be something like this
The default gateway is what you need, that's the router's address, type that in the browser, it will ask for username and password, by default it's
Username: admin
Password: (just leave it blannk, no password)
or if it's not working:
Username: admin
Password: admin

You can use the wizard to finish the job, and don't forget to push the clone the MAC address button during the process. That should do it, but if you still have problems there's a very very detaliled howto from D-link over here.

You do not need 2 routers to connect to the internet infact you need only 1. having 2 conflicts with pcs and causing them not to work.

From the wall you have your cable fro your internet that plugs into your modem, from the modem it plugs into the router by ethernet cable to the uplink slot and then your computers connect to the router. Most routers can connect 4 computers at once. If running them all wirelessly just reboot them and they should connect automatically. If your wiring them plug them into the back by an ethernet cable in the slots 1 for the first PC, 2 for the second so on and so on. You may have to cold boot everything at first meaning shut down all the computers, unplug the router and modem. Then Plug in the modem let it boot up, plug in the router let it boot up then the pcs.

If you need more hook ups if 4 isnt enough yo uneed a switch or access point not another router.

Let me know If this helps and if I can help further.

Connection

try to do a power cycle. turn off everything. then turn on the modem first the the router (if you're using one) then the computers.
check if the cables are properly connected, try to use another cable for hardwired computers. for wireless computers, make sure that it's connecting to the correct wireless network and you are using the correct wireless password (wpa/wep)
if you want to check your wireless settings, just log in to your router's page by typing http://192.168.0.1 on the address bar of your web browser. by default the username is admin and there's no password. you will be prompted by the router's page, go to the wireless section and check the router settings are the same with what the wireless computers are using

hope this'll help you but if you still have a problem, just give me your network setup (i.e. brand of the modem, router, number of computers and if PCs are hardwired or wireless)

Need help in connecting to the internet using Dlink 704p router.....

it doesn't matter whether the other computer is set to static and the other one is set to dynamic as long as both computers are getting/using valid ip addresses.
if i got it right. 1 computer is connected to the LAN port of the router and the other computer is connected to the WAN port. if so, you need to connect both computer to the LAN ports and the WAN port of the router should be connected to the modem that you are using.
if the physical connection is correct, check how you are connecting to the internet through the modem. if you can access the internet from the modem without configuring anything, you just need to power cycle. turn off everything then turn on the modem first, wait for the lights on the modem to turn on properly before turning on the router then turn on the computers.
hope this'll help you but if not, just provide the following:
(1)ISP:
(2)brand/model of the modem:
so i can help you further.

did you open TCP port 3389 on the router, and assign it to your computer? Remote desktop requires that port.

Add di-704p to an existing network

What you want to do should be quite easy:

1. Just connect one of the LAN ports of the DI-704P to a LAN port of your WRT54G. Try using a standard network cable. If the port status lights does not turn on on both sides when you connect the cable, use a "crossover" cable. Important: leave the DI-704P WAN port empty.

2. Disable the DHCP server on your DI-704P, your WRT54G will be the DHCP server.

3. Assign a static IP address to you DI-704P, different from your WRT54G. Example, if your WRT54G has 192.168.2.1, you may assign 192.168.2.4 to your DI-704P. Make sure that the IP address you assign is outside the DHCP range configured in your WRT54G and that the subnet mask is identical on both.
You will then be able to use your print server from any wired and wireless computer and the remaining LAN ports both on the WRT54G and DI-704P.

Is your physical connection right???
the WAN port should be connected to your modem, and the LAN1 should be connected to your pc.....

if right, but still doesn't connect....
check if the lights of your router is working
the POWER should have a solid light,
the STATUS, WAN, LAN 0r WLAN should be blinking...

if right, but still doesn't connect....
What kind of connection do you have?
is your modem automatically detects your password...?
or you manually type your password to connect to the internet...?
