Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items. If it still has a problem then it might be the compressor and you should probably replace the machine.

Our compact refrigerator doesn't get very cold,

One is the coldest. Post a model number and I may can help more. If it's a manual defrost then defrost it. If it's auto defrost- If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Magic Chef refridgerator with small built in freezer model#MCBR 980W. Defrosting instructions unclear; red button suppose to be pushed in for defrosting the small freezer, How is it suppose to actually...

I just defrosted my cooler and looked at the manual. It says that you should do it when the ice is only a 1/4 inch thick. Then it will do it without any effort. Well of course i waited till it was about 1 1/2 inches thick. The defrost button does help though. i pushed it and waited 3 hours and that loosened up the ice around the box. Then used an ice pick, flat head skrew driver, and a painters 5 in 1 tool. I cleaned the inside of the freezer fairly eaisly and let the rest of the defrost process clean the top and the sides of the box which i couldn't reach.

Chiping ice out of freezer section with chisle and entered a "cavity" under freezer shelf...seemed like freon gas came out of it. Is the refriderator toast? It is a Magic Chef mini-freezer.

Sound like you punctured one of the molded channels in the freezer shelf that carries the refrigerant.  Probably can't be fixed.  Possibly could be replaced.  Consult a service technician if the fridge is new enough to keep.  If it does not have an auto-defrost or frost-free function it is probably too old to be worth repairing.

Our model is MCBR 415S. The top freezer acts as

You most likely have a bad thermostat control or a bad defrost timer.
Locate the defrost timer, probably inside the temp control panel.Defrost cycles should last 30 minutes then resume freezing.
Manually turn the timer control a 1/4 turn and see if it starts.
If so, replace the defrost control.

It could also be a bad temp control.
If the timer adjustment does not start the fridge. Tap the temp control. It may have stuck contacts.

Refridgerator leaking water

You will have to check the defrost drain in the freezer by removing either the back or bottom of the freezer . Thaw ice if found in freezer and check to see if the drain hole is clear. Do not use anything to chip at the ice. Clear ice by warming it with warm water or possibly a hair dryer.

Majic Chef Freezer is collecting water at bottom and running out the front.

At the back bottom of the freezer there is a drain.  It is frozen.  Remove the rear bottom panel in the freezer.  Break up the ice (I use a small putty knife) and get all of it out including the ice on the bottom of the freezer floor.  Run HOT water over the drain until it drains freely to the pan underneath and your problem is solved.  Whirlpool makes a heat probe that connects to the defrost heater and sticks down into the drain hole that helps prevent this from happening again.  The part # is 819043 ($9-$13).  The heat probe is about 4-5 inches long so it depends on how close the defrost heater is to the drain hole.  If you look at this diagram the defrost heater is # 12.  I have seen people use a metal clothes hanger as a substitute but hanger must be tight around heater.  This keeps that drain hole warm.  Let me know if you have any other questions.9eg-hgejjf.gif
