That's because the Nikon D60 does not have Live View. Up until a couple of years ago, no DSLR's had live preview, due to the design of a DSLR over a point and shoot, as it has a pentamirror arrangement that effectivly deflects the light path to the viewfinder and only to the sensor when the internal mirror is raised. Early live preview models from Olympus had the world's first Live View system by flipping the mirror so that the picture preview could be seen on the rear monitor. Most manufacturers now incorporate Live View into most of their models but most Nikon consumer models do not as yet, apart from the newly relesed D90. Most photographers trading up from a compact to a DSLR are surprised when they cannot use the monitor in the same way. However for most aspects of DSLR photography Live View is not something that is used all the time, low down shots, macro perhaps being the most convenient use, but for general photography there is no substitute for framing through the viewfinder, that's what we've been used to doing for over half a century! Besides as pointed out previously a DSLR is often too heavy to hand hold at arms length especially with a long lens.

The shutter remains closed on a DSLR until you take a picture. There is no way to preview an image that does not exist yet.

Being stuck with the tiny viewfinder as earlier cameras had is a good thing. Holding a camera out from your body will give mixed results due to your movements. You will get better results with the traditional method

Somehow my camera, a Nikon D60, is now displaying 4 smaller pictures on the monitor vs the full screen picture I just took. How can I change it back? I cannot find an answer in the instruction manual,...

You pushed the wrong button! On the left side of the LCD display, there are four buttons. One is labeled "ISO" and the other "QUAL". In the viewing mode, these buttons are used to allow you to scan multiple frames at one time. Each time you press the ISO button, it increases the number of images displayed. Each time you press the QUAL button it reduces the number of images displayed.

Nikon digital SLR LCD viewfinder

No. The D60's LCD is used for menus, shooting settings, and reviewing pictures after you take them. You have to use the viewfinder to compose your pictures. Nikon introduced the LiveView capability into their DSLRs with the D3 and the D300, introduced after the D60.

D60 Digital Camera: I put a picture on my view finder as a background ...

What you're describing is a feature called "live view" (or more accurately "live preview"). It enables the user to treat the LCD like a viewfinder to compose shots just like on any digital compact camera.

Although many newer digital SLR's now have live view, the D60 does not so you cannot achieve what you want. All that the LCD is for is to view photos already taken and to provide camera menus and information in all other modes. Composing the images before pressing the shutter is done solely via the optical viewfinder.

I have a Nikon D60 camera. Switched it on today and there is no image in the LED display when I try to take a picture, the screen is black.

That's normal for the D60. It works the same way SLRs have worked for half a century: you view and compose through the optical viewfinder, then snap the picture. The D60 lacks the Live View feature of more recent dSLRs; the LCD (not LED) display on the back is for menus, settings, and reviewing pictures after you've taken them. It is not for composing and framing your pictures.

My Nikon D60 monitor is dark...no image preview, however, playback for viewing pictures taken works fine. I use the viewfinder for taking pictures, but wonder if I've done something to turn off the monitor...

No, you have done nothing wrong. The D60 does not have the preview function on the monitor like the compact digital cameras. Nikon gave that function a name. It is called 'Live View'. The newr models like the D90 do have that feature. You can read further about your D60 here: www.digitalcamera-hq.com

Nikon d60 does not allow me to view image whilst taking a picture

The D60 does not have a Live View capability. The monitor is used for shooting info, menus, and image reviews. It cannot be used to display the image while shooting. You must use the viewfinder for that, unless you connect the camera to a computer using the Camera Control Pro software from Nikon.
