Thanks, I was hoping to be able to swap them out My A-85 has power supply and keyboard problems and I just picked up this A-15. I guess I have to transfer stuff the old and slow way!

That's certainly true but I was hoping to move usernames, passwords, preferences and the like. I was hoping for the super easy short cut but you can't win them all.

It seems that it won't work. Because the A-85 has an EIDE hard drive and the A-15 has a IDE hard drive.

but if you have both laptops, take both hard drives out and check them out..

It sounds like both drives are trying to be the master on the cable. Have you tried setting both drives jumpers to the CABLE SELECT setting. This allows the BIOS to individually identify them and you specify in the BIOS which is the primary boot drive.

How to fix a bad hard drive.

If you have a hard drive that crashed and can't live with the thought of starting over .. there is one last thing you can do to get your info from the disk!!

FREEZE IT... YES.. i said to put your comp. hard drive in the freezer...

First you need a ESD bag (antistatic bag) You are going to need a new hard drive anyways. When you get your new hard drive. it will come with a ESD bag over it..

Put the old hard drive in the bag...
Put the new drive in your comp.
Put the hard drive in the freezer over night..
24hours in the freezer = about 30mins run time... might get more time out of it if you freeze it longer but ... you will just have to test it

put the hard drive in and test it... if it works ( like it should ) you can use the old hard drive as a backup and keep freezing it to get the info off.

Does storing a lot of pictures on my PC cause it to run slower?

It could, depending on how large your hard drive is. Side note, if these are important, back them up so you won't lose them.
One way to save space is to put your hard drive in a compress mode.
Go to start, computer, select the hard drive, right click then under properties click the box that says "compress to save space". It will save space and also help it run faster.

Hi yes you should be able to get a usb hard drive caddy off ebay for about £10-15 and you can then veiw it as an external hard drive and transfer photos, documents ,etc from it.

I have a presario f500 and it will not turn on

Try this:

Unplug everything (and I do mean *everything*) from the laptop and remove the battery.

Then with no power of any kind for the laptop, hold down the power button 15 seconds.

Attach A/C power and try to turn it on.

If that does not work, remove power and take out the CD/DVD drive and if you feel

comfortable with it, take out the RAM and hard drive.

Connect power and try to turn on. See if you get beeps or a power light on the laptop. If

you get beeps, put the RAM back in and try power again. If that gives you a display, add

back the hard drive.

Let me know what happens.

After installing hard drive, monitor, keyboard, mouse not working

Have you tried to enter BIOS? Are you able to enter BIOS?? There may be an option you have to hit to enable SATA, and to select the boot device order, which may be messing things up.
Also, remember that STATIC ELECTRICITY is your enemy! Ground yourself when working inside the case.

My hard drive is "hanging up" and sometimes does not start. The computer will start, keyboard light momentarily lights but hard drive will not start. The only way I can seem to get it started...

There is a possibility your hard drive is failing.Go to the website of your hard drive manufacturer and download a diagnostic utility. Run the diagnostic utility to determine whether the hard drive is in good condition.

Installed new hard drive now will not boot

1. First of all, you must open the computer case (with power off), and werify the power cable and data cable of hdd. please detach and put them right back.
2. then power on your pc
3. you MUST press F2 for setup utility in order for correct setings of your bios. the message "strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" came from the computer bios, not from Windows XP CD.
4. verify if you followed the correct procedure of installing an new hdd as is described on page 66 of owner's manual from dell.

"Installing a Hard Drive
1 Unpack the replacement hard drive, and prepare it for installation.
2 Check the documentation for the drive to verify that it is configured for your computer.
3 Remove the hard drive bracket (see page 64).
4 Attach the hard drive to the hard drive bracket:
a Place the small bracket tabs into the drive-securing screw holes on one side of the drive.
b Gently swing the drive toward the bracket and align the three screw holes on the other side of the
drive with the screen holes on the bracket.
c Attach the hard drive bracket to the hard drive.
d Insert and tighten all three drive-securing screws.
5 Install the hard drive:
a Place the two bracket tabs into the drive slots inside the bracket for the additional hard drive.
b Swing the bracket forward so that it is flush with the bracket for the additional hard drive.
c Replace the bracket-securing screws.
6 Connect a power cable to the drive.
7 Connect the data cable to the drive and to the system board (see page 53).
8 Close the computer cover (see page 75).
NOTICE: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network wall jack and then plug it into the
computer.
9 Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and turn them on.
See the documentation that came with the drive for instructions on installing any software required for
drive operation.
10 If the drive you just installed is the primary drive, insert a bootable floppy disk into drive A.
11 Turn on the computer.
12 Enter system setup (see "System Setup" on page 80), and update the appropriate Drive option.
13 Exit system setup, and restart the computer.
14 Partition and logically format your drive before you proceed to the next step.
See the documentation for your operating system for instructions.
15 Test the hard drive by running the Dell Diagnostics (see page 36).
16 If the drive you just installed is the primary drive, install your operating system on the hard drive."

that's all
