MX 6124 Gateway notebook screen stays black when powering up

When I power on my notebook the screen stays black. You can hear the computer powering up and the lights on the computer indicate that it is in fact powering up but the screen stays black. This does not happen all the time, just enough to make it very difficult to use the computer. The computer is only 2 years old and it was about 1100 dollars so I am trying to decide if it's better to have it repaired or just buy a new one.

I recently acquired a VGN-A170P (Sony Vaio) and it does this as well. So far, out of about 10 boot attempts, the screen and external monitor have turned on and worked flawlessly, upon power down and another boot attempt everything is black. Neither the Monitor nor the laptop screen displays anything. Though the monitor seems like it's trying, it doesn't show any text or graphics, but it also doesn't show the 'network cable unplugged' or 'no signal' signs.

Any ideas? And thanks.

Repaired! This sounde like a fuelty screen or screen inverter. To check this, connect to an external monitor, if the external works properly, then it's the screen or inverter. If the external doesn't work, let me know and we'll run the problem down to a more indepth (internal) trouble shoot.

Computer will power up but not boot. Screen remains black. Battery charges.

If the screen's backlight doesn't come on at all, that's a new screen. You can find more from Gateway's support website. If the screen lights up but stays completely black, that's a motherboard issue, same fix. If the Gateway logo comes up but never goes into windows, that's most likely a hard drive issue, same fix. If you see an error message from Windows, that's a Windows issue. You could use the recovery DVDs that came with the system to fix that. Just put them in and turn the computer on. Press F8 repeatedly until you see an option to boot to DVD. Then follow the instructions.

Please perform the following steps to resolve the issue:

Power drain process:

1. Shut the computer down.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery.
3. Press the power button down for about 30-60 seconds.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter and the battery.
5. Restart the computer.

Alternately you can test your Notebook power by removing and inserting the Memory and Hard-Disk iin their locations.

Power comes on but screen stays black

The backlight inverter board may be bad, or worst case will be bad lamp. You should look to see if the cable comes off the inverter board first. You may learn maore here:

Gateway 6750 not powering up. I have a good power

If it sounds like it is turning on for about a second and lights up then it might be the motherboard. Also the screen will stay black, but the lights will turn on.

Hi there.
Take the battery out and try to boot on AC power only, if it boots up, turn it back off and reinsert the battery and try to boot again.
If it still suffers from the same symptoms please post back for more advice.

Good luck

Gateway mx6920 powers on sounds like its booting but screen is bl

It's most likely your motherboard. It's really common with the MX series.

I'd pull the hard drive and sell the laptop for parts on eBay "as-is".

It's NOT the power module.

Or you could always swap the motherboard but in my opinion it would be best to just invest the money into a new laptop instead of this one.

Best of luck!

Try checking the inverter, if that is intermittent, it could short the system and cause the symptoms you are describing.
