Does it boot up into windows and allow you to work on it before it shuts down? Or does it shut down during the boot up process?

It sounds like it might be running hot or you have a virus or infection that causes it to shut down.

One sure sign of a computer that is running hot is to try and restart it as soon as it shuts down. If it's running hot it will not restart until you let it sit a while and cool off, then it will restart successfully.

Three things that will make a computer run hot:

1) Dust - Dust inside the computer, dust clogging the vents, fans, cpu and heatsink. Solution- Remove the case and take a can of compressed air and blow out the dust.

2) A Fan not working. Make sure the cpu fan works and the fan inside the power supply. If not replace them.

3) The Thermal Paste around the cpu and heatsink has dried up or is too thin to keep the unit cool. Remove the fan that sits on top of the cpu and heat sink, remove the heatsink, release the latch that holds the cpu in the slot and remove the cpu (remember how it goes into the slot). Clean off the old thermal paste then put the cpu back into the slot and put the latch that holds it back on. Put a fresh coat of Thermal Paste on the cpu. Turn the Heatsink over and remove the old thermal paste from it and apply a fresh coat of Thermal Paste. Put it all back together and reboot.

Download and Install MalwareBytes and run a Quick Scan.

Go to and in the search box type: "Download cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes). Download and install malwarebytes from the sites download.cnet/malwarebytes. When the site opens up click on the Green Download button on the left. Do not click the Red Download button, that's junk. When it finishes installing the Gui Interface will open up with an offer to Accept a Trial Version or Decline. CLICK DECLINE you want the totally free version. Run a QUICK SCAN. As it scans, if it finds infections the number will be in red. When it finishes scanning, click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad text document will open up showing you the results. You can close the text document and go back to the Gui Interface where you will click REMOVE SELECTED RESULTS. The objects will already be selected for you. When it finishes removing the objects click ok and it will sometimes reboot your machine.

When I am on line for about twenty to thirty minutes, my monitor goes black and then eventually the computer shuts down, what causes this?? When I reboot, the computer stays on forever

Check for the following settings:
1. Power saving feature
2. Is the system configured for sleep or hibernate?
3. Try restoring the system back to factory defaults (backup the files you need to keep first)

Note: Try to include the following information every time you request for support for your computer:
1. Brand Name (Acer, Dell, HP, IBM etc.)
2. Operating System (XP, Vista, Linux, MacOS, etc.)
3. Any recent changes made (installations, updates, upgrades, etc)
4. Any error mesages?

Try booting in safe mode (press F8 right at the end of the bios boot screen and select safe mode). If the problem still persists while running in safe mode then you probably have a hardware problem. In this case power down and re-check all of your connections, reseat any add-on cards, check all power cables, etc. If the problem goes away while in safe mode, then your problem is software related. In that case (while in safe mode still) try removing software and/or hardware drivers and rebooting normally to see if the problem goes away.

A fresh re-install of XP is always a good cure on these type of systems as well.

Screen seems to be not working properly

try using a different monitor, borrow one if you have to, if the monitor works on your computer, then it simply means you need a new monitor. As far as the computer shutting down, it may be recording the bad monitor as an error in the loading process and automatically shutting down.

Casio qt-2000 dead !

Did you let it stay like that for 5 or 6 minutes to see if it reset or did you shut it back down immediately? Sounds like you did nothing wrong, I mean what if the electricity went out it would be the same thing as what you did...if it did fry something would it happen to still be under warranty? A power surge would have produced the same result.

Gateway GM5420 Picture sometimes.

Hi old friend,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Offhand, it could be the video card or its driver(s). I doubt if it is any settings/configurations such as screen resolution or refresh rate, more I am tempted to think that the video is muting. If it is an add-on card, perhaps it may require cleaning of the pins/edge of the card. Alternately, if the PC has likewise an onboard/built-in, you may want to try that instead.

Alternately, why not just do a clean/fresh install?

Computer keeps shutting off

The problem more likely seems with the power supply or the front power button. Donnot try switch on the computer again and again it may cause damage to the motherboard. Use the following link to pin point the problem.

Emachine shut down

No, it's just the USB ports that are still being powered.
Totally normal in most new computers. Same thing with the PS2 ports.
There are jumpers on the motherboard that can change this if you really want. It's designed like that to keep things like you have powered for when you do turn it on and need them.
