My laptop died some months ago and I'd like to get it back in action. The last time they told me it could be that I need a new Hard Drive. Do you know if that is the solution and in this case where to go to get it done? I would also need a new battery

Re: acer laptop repair
You can purchase a new hard drive at pricewatch.com for half the price a computer shop will charge. They are very simple to replace and you can do it on your own. There is a rectangular cover on the side of your machine, it's held by one screw on the bottom, this is the hard drive caddy. Remove the screw and the caddy and drive will slide out. With Dell, there is a connector on the end of the hard drive, be sure to put it on the new drive. From here, you will just need to reinstall the operating system.
You're best bet for a good buy on a battery is Ebay. That's where I get my batteries from.

I bought the same computer from Walmart for my daughter for Christmas. I have had to send it in three times to have the hard drive fixed as it showed the same error that you were getting. I was very mad as the first time I had to pay $25 to have them ship me the box to send it in to them. I also tried at first to return it back to Walmart but was told it was to late and I would have to go through Toshiba. I just received it back again today. They have had to replace the hard drive three times. This is ridiculous as I have had several other computers and laptops and have never had to have a hard drive replaced before. I told them I was not paying the last two times to send it in for repair as it should never of had to go to them the first time. The girl did send me the box free the last two times but honestly I think they should just give me a whole new computer as I think these ones are lemons! I cannot believe a brand new computer would need to have a hard drive replaced 3 times in 5 months! The girl advised me if it had to go back again they would probably finally do something. I sure hope your is working better then mine.
If the computer was purchased from a shop or as a new item last christmas then i would almost
deff say that you have at least a 1yr warranty on it hopefully your children has still got some kind of
proof of purchase so that they can go back to where they bought it from
As for the battery its worth contacting the seller he may well take it back as it hasnt fixed the problem that you had
Is this reasonable? - no, but possible, yes. I have seen plenty of electronics go bad just a week or two past the warranty, including computers. Unfortunately, about all you can do about it is 1) get a new motherboard installed, or 2) get a new computer and this time buy the extended warranty. By the way, whoever installs your motherboard should be able to easily get your documents/files from the hard drive. You will need to reinstall Windows, and a new motherboard/processor will require a new installation. Just putting the hard drive back in will produce the "blue screen of death" just so you know ahead of time.
You should get more information from the repair store and you would do better to go to a laptop specialist. Look at the price of new and second hand laptops before you comit to a possibly expensive repair. It is possible to take your data from on laptop to another, if that is what is important.
