Hi, You will need the recovery discs or the XP installation disc generally the recovery disc are delivered with the laptops if you do not got it then you have to buy it from Toshiba. Then you have to boot the laptop with that disc by pressing F2 at the Toshiba logo screen and selecting the cd/dvd drive as the boot device.
Complete the recovery again but leave the discs in the computer. That way if the computer needs some files while rebooting it will take them off the cd....if not it will load and that will be the end of that. Just remember when you boot the computer for the first time to initiate the recovery, when it says to boot from cd touch any key...that is only done one time when you first initiate the recovery...after that do not touch any key if it says that...just let windows boot on it own. Once windows boots on its own, then you can take the recovery disc out and put it away.
You will need to enter the boot menu at start up and select boot from CD, or set the CD drive to boot before the hard drive in the bios or utilities. When you first start the machine there will bw a Toshiba screen, on this screen it will tell you what to press for boot menu or utilities. Some machines zip right through this screen so you'll have to be quick. After you get it to boot from CD, make sure the disc is in upon start up and you're good.
Find a technician who can do it for you - or if you are conversant with computers you get an eternal dvd rom Drive and use it. Have you tried the floppy drive if your computer has any? or the flash disk?
You have to order replacement disks from Toshiba - probably about $30 for a set.
If you are getting errors with installing just plain XP, you probably have a hardware problem - Probably a bad hard drive or stick or RAM. Try pulling one stick out (if you have 2) and reinstalling XP.
You can get hard drive testing software here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
Get the ISO download on that page. If you need to know how to burn the ISO to CD properly look here:
