Since you'll need to go to a bike shop to buy the right shifter and brake cables anyway you should have them show you some of the fine points and ask about the special tools (cable cutter, for example) required. You may find that unless you intend to become a regular self-service bicycle mechanic the cost of equipping for that is prohibitively expensive and the occasional paid repair or tune-up would be worthwhile. In fact, a tune-up would address your problem and others of which you may be unaware.
Front or rear? Is the cable not in the shifter? If the cable is not in the shifter, there will be a screw in the shifter (made of plastic, usually black) facing outward. You open this and shift the shifter into the highest gear, then slip the cable through and out the side that accepts the cable sleeve. Then you run it through the sleeve and to its appropriate derailleur (left hand=front, right hand=rear).
