Same symptoms can happen if the crank sensor is going bad. You need to test it when it has died or the reading may show it's good. Good test procedures can be found in haynes or chilton manuals (I prefer chilton as their diagrams seem to be better.) Crank sensor may set a code in the computer. Most of the larger parts stores will do a free scan test. That should give you some direction.
If it does that with some discs only you could try cleaning them,if it does with most discs there may be dust on the laser head, to clean that you have to take the cover off and gently clean it.
