Tip & How-To about Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Windows XP Firewall: How to set an exception

Windows XP comes with its own firewall software, called Windows Firewall. While it's not as customizable as some other firewall programs on the market, there are quite a few things you can adjust in order to balance security with functionality. If you need to allow traffic into your network or onto your computer, you can set up an exception in the Windows Firewall to let a specific program have access, or to let communication occur on a specific port.

To set up a firewall exception in Windows XP, follow the steps below.

1. Open the Control Panel (usually found on the Start menu).

2. Double click on the Windows Firewall icon.

3. When the Windows Firewall window appears, make sure the firewall is on and the box marked "Don't allow exceptions" is unchecked.

4. Go to the Exceptions tab.

5. If the software you want to set an exception for appears on the list of programs and services, then all you have to do is put a check next to it and click OK. Otherwise, if you want to create an exception for a program, click Add Program, and for a port, click Add Port.

6. For a program, you can either select the program you want from the list that appears, or you can click Browse to find the program on your computer. For a port, enter the name you want to call the exception (which can be just the port number if you want) and then below that type in the TCP or UDP port number. (If it is a UDP port, select UDP below the port number.)

7. Click OK to create the exception.

8. Click OK again to save the change.

my dell laptop needs firewall

Dell now ships all computers ordered through Home and Home Office with software firewalls installed and enabled.

If you have an older Dell PC that did not originally come with a firewall program and you have not already added a separate firewall program to your PC, you will need to purchase a firewall product.

If you are using Windows XP operating system, you can use its built-in firewall called Internet Connection Firewall or Windows Firewall.

If you need any kind of technical assistance to install firewall ,you can contact support cell at http://www.vtechsquad.com/

i every time open my computer one massage is open on my desktop your system may be at risk how to solve this problem

Windows is alerting you that you have either

1. No firewall settings configured, no firewall, or turned off windows firewall

or

2. No anti-virus/anti-malware software

To solve number one, you should turn on the windows firewall or install a 3rd party firewall program of your choosing. To turn on windows firewall, follow this procedure for Windows XP:

1. START > Control Panel > Security Center
2. When security center opens, look for the section "Manage Security Settings For" then click "Windows Firewall."
3. In the Dialog box that comes up, click the circle in front of "On" to turn on the firewall. This setting may already be turned on. Verify the firewall is turned on.
4. Click "Ok" to save your choices and exit, or "Cancel" to close the window without saving any choices.

If you choose to install a 3rd party firewall program, use the above procedure and select "OFF" in step 3. You want to do this so that there will not be conflicts between the Windows Firewall and the 3rd party firewall program. Once you turn off Windows firewall, immediately install and turn on your 3rd party firewall program to minimize exposing your computer to threats.

For number two, you should install a quality anti-virus or anti-malware program. McAfee, and Norton are popular choices. Avast! Antivirus, AVG and Malware Bytes are a bit more comprehensive, especially Malware Bytes. Avast! Antivirus is free, both to download and update. The license lasts a year, but you can simply re-download and install the program to get a fresh new license that's good for a year. Each program has varying features and goodies, so choose the one that's best for you.

my software for singer futura machine does not install on either computer how can I fix the problem

The problem could be the operating software (Windows XP, Vista, 7), but it sounds most likely like a firewall problem. If you have a firewall program installed like the one that automatically comes on Windows 7, it doesn't allow much to be installed unless you tell it to allow it. Also, Windows 7 needs a patch to allow the Futura software to install and run (available at www.Futura-support.com). Download the patch. When you go to run it, be sure you're off the internet (right click on Windows Explorer icon that appears in the lower left corner of your screen and choose Close Window). Now left click on the Start icon in the lower left corner. Choose "Systems and Security" in the right column, then "Windows Firewall". On the lefthand side will be the second choice of "Turn Windows Firewall On or Off." You're only going to turn the Firewall off long enough to install the Patch and, YES IT IS SAFE! Once you've installed the patch, go immediately back in and turn your firewall back on.

If you use another firewall program (i.e., Norton, McAfee, Computer Associates), you'll have to refer to their Help on how to allow this to install, though their programs will probably ask if you want to install this software rather than just block it. Unless you set Windows 7 firewall to ask you, it just blocks everything.

I hope this is your problem.
