Question about Dell Inspiron 700M Notebook

Dell 700m memory upgrade

I am trying to install a 1gb memory module in slot 2 (bottom access), it does post but shortly after boot desktop display fragments followed by system lock-up will not reboot. I reinstalled the factory 256mb module and after a couple reboots all is well. Do I need to install under the keyboard? System posts 756mb ram so module under keyboard must be a 512?

No, it's not necessary. Verify the memory is compatible with the computer.

Your memory modules may be ECC or Registered (which are mainly used for Servers). They will fit in the slots, but your System will not post with them. I would suggest returning the RAM you purchased, and replace with 2 x 1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz non-ECC Unregistered Memory Modules. A matching pair is preferred.

If you receive a "Memory available limited to 256MB!" message after installing more than 256MB, enter BIOS (F2) and turn OS Install to OFF. Exit saving changes.Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

You may also wish to update to the latest BIOS for this model from the Dell Support Site: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=ca&cs=cadhs1&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_CEL_3000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

I have a dell optiplex gx270, tried to upgrade my memory with samsung 1gb pc3200 ddr1 but doesnt work, just beeps on start up.

That is the correct memory module (Non-ECC).

Remove all memory modules.
Insert the one Samsung PC3200 module and start up.
If it doesn't boot, then try a different slot.
If it works ok, then add-in your original mamory modules. If they are PC2700, then they may not work together.

New ram memory on dell dimension celeron trying to

You should check with the folks at Dell since whoever wrote their technical manuals for this machine can't do basic math. There are 2 memory slots and each can handle a maximum capacity of 512MB, yet they claim the maximum capacity for the machine is 2GB instead of 1GB. Using 512MB modules would probably work.

Did you add the two sticks with the 512 or remove the 512 and add the two 1gb sticks? Try booting the machine with ONLY the 1gb sticks in.

Your machine supports 1gb modules but they can't be higher than 533MHz. Check that the memory you purchased was either PC3200 (400MHz) or PC4200 (533MHz) and is 1.8v. If you post the part number off of one of the modules I can look it up for you.

You may need to install memory in matching pairs. If the new memory is a single 1Gb module and you didn't already have a similar one they may not work together. Try removing the original module(s) and see if it makes a difference.

How to install 1GB memory card ??

One slot is under a panel on the bottom of the machine, and the other slot is under the keyboard. Here's a link to the service manual for the 700m, it covers just about everything. If you need any further assistance, just ask.

Installing memory

HI 1008 ,
It is very important to know which branded machine you have ; whether it's Dell , HP etc. I would also require to know the model number and whether you have a Desktop machine or a Notebook.

Anyways , here's a generic guide for your help...

You shouldn't have to remove it, but if the system won't boot after try reversing the slot, and if that doesn't work take out the 256.
