Well the animal is the model we have and it's bagless, and I've cleaned (without taking apart) the "tunnel" area. Maybe taking it apart may help. Thanks for your help! I have cleaned both canisters, but it takes forever for them to dry. I have even used a blowdryer to dry it. What is the deal with this vacume? It smells not too long after I clean it. IS there any other solution? It is suppose to be made for animal hair. I would have never bought this if this is what I have to incounter. I should have got another Kirby. How do you take the top bin apart> I have just cleaned and rinsed it with cleaner and water. I had Dog hair caught in the holes and tried to get the "String of dog hair" out. It was awful. Any suggestions please? Thank you-

When mine starts to stink I clean the filter. I then take the plastic bin apart and soak both the top and bottom in a bleach water solution. Let it dry completely before using again (or you'll get a "mud" buildup).
Cleaning and replacing the bag may help-it sounds like it may have gotten wet at one time. You couls also sprinkle baking soda lightly over your carpet and that may help absorb odours in the system. If the hose is detachable and any other pieces you can wash them with a vinegar solution. Hope that helps.

As you'll probably be aware, DC59 has one washable filter, engineered to last the lifetime of the vacuum. We recommend washing this at least once a month using cold water without detergent, as shown in the video below:
Always allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it - this may take at least 24 hours. Replacing the filter when damp could cause damage to the machine not covered under guarantee, and could also contribute to any odour coming from the vacuum. It may help to place the filter somewhere warm to dry, such as by a radiator, in an airing cupboard or on a sunny window sill.
Please note, the cyclone pack and clear bin should never be washed or submerged in water as this could cause permanent damage to the vacuum. However, it is possible to separate the clear bin from the cyclone pack as shown below. You can then use a soft brush to remove any fluff or debris from the mesh shroud, and you can wipe the inside of the clear bin with a damp cloth to remove any clinging dust particles. Make sure the bin is completely dry before reassembling.
I hope this helps, but if you'd like any further advice on cleaning or maintaining your DC59, please give our experts a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).
Yes. You can take the filter bag off the Kirby. just press the button at the top of the bag to release the bag, and just unscrew it at the base... and hand was in warm water using some nice smelly detergent.... hang out in the sun to dry..... and replace the paper filter bag more often.... I need to as I have 3 dogs and the dog hair does smell after a few days inside the filter bag, so I replace the filter bags quite often to stop any smelling... Bugbuyer
I have the Dyson DC 28. After cleaning out the filter multiple times I still had the wet dog smell coming out from the vacuum. I called Dyson's support line. The rep told me to put dryer sheets in the clear plastic bin and let it run for about 5-10 mins, make sure the bin is clear of all debris first. I did it and it worked. Not only is the smell gone, the dryer sheets removed all the remaining dust stuck in the bin. I was happy!
I had this problem along with a clogged filter. I used the solution for clogged filter here on Fixya and the dog smell went away too. It has to do with the flange on the cylinder getting pushed up out of position. Give it a try.
http://www.geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=40540&thid=528723 Vacuum cleaner smell Posted by lcw1 on Apr 20, 2008 Our Hoover Windtunnel has recently started emitting a bad odor when we use it. We recently bought a new house, and the previous owners had dogs, but the carpet was professionally cleaned before we moved in. I have replaced all of the filters and belts to no avail. At this point, I have to remove and rinse off all of the filters after every time I use the vacuum to prevent stinking up the entire house. Any suggestions? Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover U6616-900 Windtunnel Bagless Upright I think you are right, if it is not the switch then it would be the motor. Does it smell bad like a burning smell? If so it is definitely the motor and then @ that point you may want to get an estimate for motor replacement, and keep in mind of what you spent on the vacuum versus what the cost of repair might be. My own rule of thumb is if it cost more than ½ of the price I paid for it then you have to decide – do I want to pay the repaired cost for the vacuum or do I want to purchase a new one. Just a suggestion... You may want to check with your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.hoover.comTelephone Contact our Customer Service Department at 1.330.499.9499 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST Don – The Vac Man Go Ahead.Use Us.
This is an inherent problem with bagless vacuums. The filter(s) will absorb odors and odors will get trapped in places that you cannot clean. This is why I always recommend bagged units. They are easier to clean and the odors go out with the bag. About the only thing you can do is put a deodorizer in the machine and keep the filter clean. Be careful not to use petroleum based deodorizers as they can affect the plastic.
It sounds like you will need to first clean it very well if you haven't yet and then most likely the problem is the rear hepa filter is ruined due to having sucked up what you did and gotten some on the filter. Each time you turn on the machine hot air is blown through it and can smell very foul. I had gotten mine wet once from the machine tipping over and had to replace it because it started smelling moldy. Very easy job to do and its about 25 bucks and you can find them on ebay or other places. Hope this helps
