Replacing usb ports on ibm thinkpad a41

Hi,
I have an older IBM Thinkpad A41. I use it to keep my music collection. I works great, but the two USB ports in the back have fallen apart and don't work. Where could I find instructions and parts info? I'd like to try to fix it myself. Hopefully I could upgrade to USB 2.0 if possible.
Thanks,
Dan

Try this link, they have breakdown diagrams for most machines. In most cases with the Thinkpad the usb ports are soldiered to the board, you can screw up a board real easy when soldiering it, so be patient and careful.

Hi, IBM ThinkPad R52 PC (1860-2nu) comes with Infrared and wi-fi however it has no bluetooth. If you want to use bluetooth, you may buy a USB Bluetooth adapter. It can be connected with the laptopvia USB port and works just fine.
Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya! CreativeTECH

As an alternative to replacing the motherboard. Purchase a PCMCIA USB card and insert it into the PCMCIA slot in your ThinkPad. Use this USB card for your USB devices, cheaper than replacing the motherboard if you can get one. This model ThinkPad is old.

Hi, providing this Thinkpad you are talking about was built around seven years ago, it'll only have the USB 1.0 which means a slower data transfer rate. Which is normal for this age of laptop

Is IBM Thinkpad T22 equipped with WIFI & what's the USB port vers

IBM Thinkpad T22 doesn't have Wi-Fi adapter installed. you need a USB Wi-Fi adpater in other to have Wireless connection.

You can go for D-Link, 3COM,belkin USB Wi-Fi adapter. Make sure the USB Wi-Fi adapter support the Operating System you installed.

Good Luck.

USB ports not working in IBM thinkpad R51 series

have you tried dong an OS re-install with another hard drive? this is one way to verify if the USB port is really bad...you need to isolate the software-caused and hardware-caused problems.

You can get an adapter such as an DB9/com port to USB or LPT to USB adapter and you'll be able to connect a USB device or USB hub to your ThinkPad.

My usb port is not 2 - I keep getting a message that states that I need to get a hi speed usb device host controller. Where can I get this? I have an ibm thinkpad r40.

On some laptops that are older (an IBM R40 is a bit older) there are no high speed usb ports but if you plug in a usb device that is USB 2.0 into a usb port that is not high speed, the operating system (Sounds like Windows XP) will display that message even though you don't have a high speed usb controller. The USB device will still work but at a slower speed. You can ignore this message without a problem
