I have downloaded the bios. Copied it to a xp startup stiffy. My stiffy drive is a usb plug in. With that plugged in it does not start up. I also cannot start up with the XP installation cd in the cd drive. Is there not any buttons on the keybord that I must push when I switch on at startup. It keeps on giving me the 3 beeps.

  • Tracer2 Jun 29, 2008

Sorry for the rating im new at this. The pc does nothing but give me the three beeps and cd light flikering. Screen is blacker than a very dark night. tried all the suggestions above. got this from acer website:

Definitions Error Beeps Error Code (Port 80H)

You have to download the old bios with another PC and then flash your bios with that.

Use this list to find your bios download depending on your video chip.

On bootup of your laptop you can press F2 or F10 or Del and enter the system bios setup. If the access key doesn't work the F Key should be displayed onscreen when you first boot.

Enter the system bios setup screen. You'll want to navigate around your pages to find the boot sequence order. In that page where this is found, you want to set the boot order to CD/DVD, USB Device, Hard Disk 0 or 1 what ever number scheme is used on your laptop. A base 10 number scheme starts at 1 and binary base 0 its starts at 0 and this is unique from PC to PC and laptops.

The point is you want your USB ports in the boot up sequence prior to your hard disk. That should allow the system to boot from the USB floppy.

Another alternative is to press F8 at bootup by continually tapping on that key and you may see a boot from what window with options listed numerically. Choose the one with the USB device.

Should these two options fail you, you'll have to burn a CD on the other computer using Nero hopefully with Nero Express and hunt through your options to find and create a bootup disc. When asked where the boot image is located tell it to use your floppy or in Nero tell it to use Nero's boot image. Copy and past the flash program and the bios file onto the contents page in Nero Express. You can download a trial version of Nero from this page, click on download, forget the email address. If you like it it is a good value.

Once your PC is set to a boot order that has your CD drive first, it will load that or should.

Now, you know that bios updates are no simple thing to apply and creating a backup first is really important.

Thanks for changing the rating. I and we all appreciate at least a helpful, but normally and when you do return to us in the future its best to leave it until you're done, in spite of our reminders to rate our solutions.

You'd be surprised at how many people never rate at all.

    We'll get you going.

The 80h is a channel ID for one hard drive, there are others.

Can I upgrade Vaio laptop bios in Dos?

BIOS upgrades are USUALLY done in DOS. Most times, you need to boot from a floppy or CD that is specific for BIOS upgrade. Some BIOS upgrade software may be apllied through Windows, but this depends on your computer manufacturer.
BTW, if your computer is running ok, DO NOT MESS UP WITH THE BIOS. You may risk ruining your laptop.
IF IT IS NO BROKEN, DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT.

Install xp on sony series nr

The BIOS doesn't care nor detect the installed OS and should only be upgraded if you are having BIOS issues.

The old adage "If it works don't try to fix it" certainly applies here.

Windows Vista

hi there
There is 2 ways to do this, firstly you can create a floppy disk with the updated bios flash file on ( not recommended to a novice ) or reinstall XP and updated the bios by downloading it from the manufacturers website and installing it that way. After that you can install Vista.

good luck

Upgrading bios without booting??

Hi,
Go to the following link, download the BIOS file and save it on the desktop. If you are running windows vista. Right click on the file and left click on Run as adminstartor. Follow on screen instructions and the BIOS would be updated. You would not require any external media for the job.

http://tinyurl.com/2qk4u4

Points to remmber :
1. Disconnect all external devices from the laptop
2. Both AC adpater(power cord) and battery should be in the system
3. The system would automatically shutdown and restart the system. Donnot press button during this stage.

On personal note , i would suggest to redo your windows and all problems would be resolved.

Thanks
Mandeep

Do remmber to rate the solution, it helps me improve. In case you need more support let me know.
