What is the L switch for ?

That is the ZOOM LOCK SWITCH
This stops the zoom extending when you carry the lens.
Set it at 24 mm setting to stop the lens barrels from rotating and extending.
Unset it to free the lens again.

Is adding grip for nikon d5100 solve the problem of auto focus with sigma 170-500 lens

No. This lens lacks an autofocus motor, relying on the camera to have one. The D5100 lacks an autofocus motor, relying on the lens to have one. Adding a battery grip does not change this situation.

The D5100 only autofocuses with lenses having an internal autofocus motor. Nikon designates such lenses AF-S, Sigma calls it HSM. Lenses without the motor will only autofocus with the larger and heavier Nikon cameras such as the D7000.

Will not rèad any discs

You have either a scratched, dirty, or worn out lens if the disc spins and does not read. If cleaning the lens with a lens cleaning disc does not help, I would recommend either buying a new PS2 DVD drive or a new PS2. A new drive will be about 5-25 dollars and you will either have to find somebody to, or you yourself put it in just don't destroy your PS2 in the process. You can find PS2's for about 40-140 depending on fat or slim and new or used.

I've given up trying to remove the "err" message from my D80 . I've done everything that was suggested ! removed the lens , cleaned the lens contacts , removed the battery and added a new...

"ERR" is camera error. Two items to try:1/ remove battery while camera is ON while waiting for approx 30 seconds, press and hold the shutter release, insert battery and give it a go. 2/ if there is a camera hardware reset button try that with camera ON. There may be a firmware update on Nikon web site, but if you cannot read the memory card, you cannot install it.

I cannot use my Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530 ATA Device

don't worry frn, this is not your DVD's fault. it will happen due to the cd's speed, while recording to the CD's if you burn cd's or DVD in very high speed then some of the DVD's cann't support that why your dVD do. so be sure that you have the CDs that are coppied with less speed. or it will happen due to the dust in lens of DVD so use the lens clearner CD to clean the lens i hope that it will ok. byee

Adding WD-40

gears hang up alot or the lens was banged while out make the lens stay out.. a tiny motor that drives these gears might be bad,
might be a low battery, sometimes other errors make the camera just shut down with lens sticking out, I used baby oil once to free a sticking lense mech but only like 1/8 of a drop.
your problem doesnt sound good and i think you added more.
