Washer does not fill with water and starts agitating when turned on

I had a broken motor coupling in my kitchenaid top loader, so I replaced the coupling. I put the motor back in place, hooked up all cables, but it now will not fill with any water when I turn the timer to the start of a cycle. It will put water in the rinse cycle, but not in the beginning. It just immediatly begins to run the agitator. I replaced the water level switch, and checked the hose, but I am not sure where to go from here.

There are two groups of wires running to the motor. One is a clip, which can only clip in one way that I can see, just like a car or computer. The other is a single wire. I made sure both are plugged in, but it still does the same thing.

  • thalin80 Jul 09, 2008

I checked the wiring, and there is just the clip of wires that clip to the motor, and a single wire that attaches in another location. All seem to be attached properly.

I have viewed the general why my washer doesnt work helps on many sites, but none of them realy directly help me address my problem. When I turn on the washing machine, it begins to agitate immediatly, skipping the fill cycle in the beginning. I changed out the water level switch, and checked the pressure hose. I checked the wiring of the motor, where there is one clip, and one single wire, both attached firmly to the motor in the appropriate parts from the diagram I have. I have checked the continuity on the solinoids on the water valves, and they all check out ok, yet it still will not fill with water. What am I missing?

The valves are clean. I was wondering if it could possibly have anything to do with the timer?

It appears your controller board has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Fills up with water won't agitate just make vibtrating noise (top loader)

Hello there If your washer will not agitate after filling please check these solutions that i have provided Lid switch If the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Motor coupler Many washers produced by use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it. Belts Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it Drive motor Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor. Drive pulleys The motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt. If so, replace the pulley. Transmission The transmission could have either of these problems: a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may not agitate properly or at all. The transmission may have a worn or broken gear, or some other internal problem. If you suspect a transmission problem, you may have to call a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

The washer will not agitate or spin out. the washer will fill and empty the water.

The most likely cause is the motor coupling, one on the motor and one on the transmission. UNPLUG POWER FROM WASHER. If it is broken your washer will fill and you will hear the motor running but nothing will happen, no agitation or spin. You will need to loosen the console, remove the cabinet drain pump and motor, then the motor coupling can be replaced on the motor and transmission. Part comes as a kit. Part number 285753a. It sounds like you have a broken motor coupling. This is a very inexpensive and simple repair.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria. PS That "belt" you found is probably part of the rubber bushing that has come apart.

Washer has a motor coupling between gearcase and motor. This coupling is probably broken.
