The Lamp probably is bad but it going bad would not cause a buzzing sound. I have a hunch that the Color Wheel Motor is bad causing the buzzing noise. It is a major repair and the cost would be expensive. But this is the deal, you will need to get a qualified repair person out to confirm the symptom to be sure. You can go ahead and replace the Lamp to get the set working again and use it for as long as you can stand the buzzing noise. If it is the Color Wheel Motor, I would check prices on replacement sets just to get a feel of how much you are willing to spend for repairs.
I hope this helps,
Hello, The grinding sound that you are hearing is your color wheel. They can make a noise from a buzz to a power saw type of noise. Usually the set will continue to play with the noise, but it is annoying. You will need to replace the color wheel now. This is not as easy as the lamp replacement, as you have to pull the light engine to access the color wheel. It is not hard just more work and be careful of the color wheel lenses. I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If I have helped you, please help me, and rate this suggestion the highest FixYa rating. Samsung is notorious for having the motor on the color wheel burn out. If the color on the tv starts to fade or shift tones when the rev'ing or noise is happening then you'll know its the color wheel. There are only two moving parts in this set, the color wheel and the fans. If you're smelling something, it could be either. Take the back off the set and put a piece of tape on the lamp door switch and turn the set on. Try to pinpoint the source of the noise. If its a fan, no big deal, Radio shack should have a replacement. If it sounds like its comming from under the set, dig a little deeper and try unhooking the color wheel motor, not as easy as I am making it sound but either way the fan is about $20 to fix and the color wheel is about $100. Sure beats a $400 tech bill. If you get stuck, comment back and I'll send pictures of the dismantle.
