Thanks proemile57. Your advice helped cyan. Now yellow will not print. Is a brand new cart. There is no message in lcd. It will print with no yellow. Printer acts happy w/o yellow. Ink is dripping from the cart on the surface. What can be the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Our printer is not acknowledging our black ink and indicates all other cartridges are low. We put in all new cartridges, but it still saying no black ink and low ink on the other colors.

I just fixed my 240c by taping over the sensor inspection window on each cartridge, I used the same color tape as the cartridge, maybe blackwould work on all four but I had the colored tape so that's what I used. Works Like a charm I guess till the ink actually runs out.

I read proemile57's post and following it i took off the tip of the arrow sticker on the side of the cartridge and covered the window on the front for the colors the machine was complaining about, installed them, and then there was a 3 minute cleaning cycle, now its printing perfectly

Install cyan

That message is saying you need to replace the blue "Cyan" ink cartridge in the printer. When the printer detects that the ink in out it tells you to replace the empty one to continue printing. Just buy a new cartridge install it and you will be good to go.

Perhaps you can download the software. This table from Brother support lists the drivers available for the MFC-240C and Windows 2000: (click the "more information" link before downloading if you are unsure)

Brother MFC240C in stallation

The solution for this one's an easy fix. All you have to do is go to brother, click on Product Support, select your country or the nearest one to you, then where it says please enter your model name type in mfc-240c and hit enter. Click where it says MFC-240C and then go to downloads, select drivers, then your operating system, and then your language, and finally, click search. It will bring you to the page with teh drivers for your printer. In the downloads area, you can also download the manuals, the software for your printer, etc.. It's all quite well laid out. Let me know if you run into any problems.

Message: "Ink empty black" --won't reset

this could be because of generic ink carts which do not have the size of the original ones. If so put some paperstrip beneath the cart to lift it up a bit.
Anyway, did you tell the printer that you have changed the cart by pressing 1? Look at the display when you insert the cart!

New ink cartridge istallation: Brother MFC-240

I guess you d used generic ink carts?!
If yes, the cart holder needs replacement due to ink that has stained the led control. The ink has made a short circuit. The error can only be deleted by replacing the whole cart holder!

Ink problems....

Take all carts out of the machine. Have a look into the cart holder. Is there ink swapping beneath the white plastic? (You might shake the machine ;-)

If yes, the cart holder leaks and needs replacement.

If not (your lucky!) it could be that the automatic cleaning procedure which starts when a cart is changed has soaked the carts empty.

Do set machine with date and time and NEVER unplug NOR use a power switch which breaks the power supply.

Do use constant power and switch off machine by pressing stand-by-fax-button!

Everytime when machine comes to (new) power contact it runs an extensive ink cleaning procedure. thats why your carts are always near empty....
The stand-by will prevent this and machine does some cleaning procedures which consumes only a few drops(!) of ink!

The display asks you if you have changed the carts. Do answer this question by pressing 1 for YES or 2 for NO.
This will reset the built-in inkcountermanagement to the correct settings

MFC-240C colr problem

No. Just buy original carts and install them. Run the manual cleaning procedure twice. Wait overnight and repeat the manual cleaning again. Should work. (..and give the compatible ones a dump)

MFC-420cn printer says install cartridge. But there is a new one just installed.

by useing original brother carts instead of poor designed generic ones.

Or by answering the lcd-display question if you have changed the cart.

or by making sure that the plastic nose secures the cart which was placed well into the holder.

If that doesnt work, the circuit board might be defective.
