how do you change the string on the trimmer?

  • Glenloy May 03, 2009

Although a couple of years old, today was the first time that I have ever used used this product which has an automatic feed system. When it stopped trimming the grass, I investigated and discovered it had run out of cord! Here's the problem: I'm assuming it needs a new spool, but try as I may the old spool won't budge. Am I supposed to do something other than unscrewing it? Help!

Probably wound backwards. Follow the arrow on the spool for both. Both SAME rotation.

Is it best to buy a spool for Grass Hog, than trying to re-string myself? String seems to get stuck.

I need a new spring to replace the lost one that makes the spool advance. Its a Grass hog that is a few years old. Not battery powdered, but electric. Can yoy tell me where to buy one or what size...

They have upgraded the old string heads (type 1) to a new string head (type 2). They say type 1 is no longer available. Please see part numbers 20 & 21 in this 14" Grass Hog parts breakdown diagram. The new string head is relatively inexpensive. If you don't want to get one, could I suggest you take the old spring (if you have it) and match it up with possibly a new spring at the hardware store. Sometimes you get lucky! Here is the parts diagram for it. Hope this helps!

;How do you lengthen the string? (Have the grass

To lengthen the string:

- Turn the Grass Hog upside down
- Push in on the two release buttons on either side of the spool (they're orange)
- Pull the spool head off and spin it to release more string while you pull the string with your hand (make sure it is still fed out through the hole in the base)
- Pop the spool head back into place

Test the Grass Hog to make sure the string is not too long. If it is you'll hear it cracking against the plastic guard on the base.

Did you re-string it? If you did it is possible that you crossed the string over itself and it is stuck. Check that and good luck...Lee

I don't undestand how to fix the line after it

The string is wound the wrong direction; it should be wound clockwise on the spool.
