Question about Frigidaire FRS26KR4A Side by Side Refrigerator

Frosted coils on side by side frigidaire`

I have been reading the suggestions on this topic already and have changed the defrost therm, but unsure how to check the defrost heater. I have just installed the therm so I have to wait until tomorrow to see if the problem is fixed. I have been defrosting the coils for 4 days with a hair dryer, and the freezer would work fine. Then in 24 hours the frost would build back up. I just read the tip on how to manually start the defrost with the light switch, but I had already changed the therm. and the coils were defrosting due to the heat in the house.

Would the heater turn red? I don't have a meter to check the resistance, I just don't want to buy a heater and I need a timer.

The model number is FRS26KR4DW6 we have only had it for 3 years.

You can bypass the thermo and manually put it in defrost. the heaters will get hot fast so don't leave them on more than a few minutes
if you want to you can take off the heater(s) and look at them to see if they look burnt out, sometimes you can see the bad spot.

Refridgerator side is not cooling and freezer is wroking fine

1st i must get you to look for some symptoms look on back wall (inside) of freezer. Is there "sno-cone" type frost? yes? defrost problem. heater,defrost thermostat or defrost timer or adaptive defrost control. no? is fan running? is evaporator coil cold ,frosty? no fan but cold frosty coil(that's frosty but not frosted up) then bad fan motor probably. you need volt meter,and know how to use it. otherwise call a tek.

My GE profile side by side defroster stopped working. I have a ice build up at the bottom. defrosting it by shutting off and restarting after it all melted did not work. Any suggestions? Thanks, Don

Hello Don,
Here is what to check on the defrost system ;

DEFROST HEATER ...remove back wall of freezer and you will see a black heater at the bottom of the coil thats frosted up,it looks similar to the bake element in your oven,or in some cases it is going to be a spiraled wires inside of a glass tube. To check it,use a multimeter set to the lowest ohms of resistiance setting and follow and find the wires at the top of that frosted coil,unplug/disconnect those wires and check for continuty with around 5-20 ohms of resistiance. If it has that amount of ohms the heater is good. If your meter display does not change or displays OL the defrost heater is broke and needs to be replaced

DEFROST TERMINATION THERMOSTAT... it's round and has 2 wires and clips to the top of that frosted up coil. IT MUST BE CHECKED WHEN COLD SO BEST TO DO WHEN FROST IS STILL BUILT UP. To check it disconnect the wires on it and check for ZERO ohms of resistiance. As with the heater if the meter display OL or doesnt change,it is the problem

DEFROST CONTROL...it is hard to check for a semi unskilled person and if the heater or defrost t-stat check good its going to be the problem. It will NOT be in the freezer it could be on back wall or inside the control panel in the refrigerator section.

Good luck,
Gene

While these pictures are for a different brand ALL refrigerators are similar and may look some what different than your but will be similar enough oldtech2332_10.jpgoldtech2332_11.jpg

Fridge side is warm

Hello,
Do you see frost built up in the freezer side? if their is frost in the freezer its blocking air flow into the refrigerator side and here is what to check why it isn't defrosting automatically;

I have a frigidaire side by side Mod FRS26ZGHB0 and the freezer coils keep freezing up

Hello,
Here is what to check to see what is wrong in defrost system;

DEFROST TIMER...it will be behind the kickplate/front grill under freezer door. Turn the part shown in the picture until the compressor turns off and if within 5 minutes the heater mentioned below turns on the defrost timer is going to be the problem. IF heater doesnt come on it will be one of the parts listed below.

I have a 20 year old sub-zero refrigerator. For the last two weeks the refrigerator is so cold that everything is freezing. If I turn down the thermostat the freezer warms up.

It sounds like the freezer side is losing its capacity......All cooling done on the refrigerator side is done by air flow of the fan in the freezer compartment by the evaporator coils(aluminum fins looks like a radiator)
You might want to pull the back panel of the freezer section and look at it.
Normally it is fully frosted when running(whitish snow covering on evaporator) If it is only partially frosted it has a freon leak or compressor problem. If it is engulfed in frost and there is no air flow possible through it your defrost system has failed.My guess is it is partially frosted and you have a freon leak.

Also check the fan by the compressor is running on the outside and the condensor coils on the outside on the bottom are clean.( fan runs when compressor runs)

Freezer is frosted in back Refrigerator is warm

The problem is the defrost system located behind the freezer back panel.

The defrost system (AKA evap. system) is composed by an heating coil, a fan , and a defrost thermostat, and its function is avoiding ice formation on coil.
When defrost system is defective the fridge wont cool down properly

In your fridge , either evaporator fan, thermostat or heating element is faulty, and the ice on coils is preventing the appliance from cooling down properly.

Refrigerator uncool

Hello. The first thing you need to check is the frost pattern on the evaporator coil in the freezer. Take out the bottom drawer in the freezer and look into the slots in the back wall of the freezer. If it is completely frosted up then you may need a new defrost timer, heater, or defrost terminator. If it isn't frosted up check to see if the fan underneath is blowing by taking the back panel off of the back of the frig near the floor. If all of this checks out let me know I we can try a few other things.

Maytag Model MZD2766GEW iced coils

This sounds like a defrosting problem. There is a defrost timer, a heater element, and a therm-o- disk thing that shuts the heater off when the frost is melted. These are the things to check, but it's usually the heater that is burnt out.

WESTINGHOUSE FREEZER MATE

Check the back bottom freezer wall to see if there is frost on it. If so you have a defrost problem. If the coil dosent defrost it becomes an ice ball and no air can flow. Could be a defrost timer which switches the refrig into the defrost cycle. There is also a heater and thermostat in the system. Shut it off overnight with the doors open to defrost it and get it temporarily running . If it is not frosted up make sure your coil underneath is clean and your cooling motor is running in the back, bottom.
