Your sheets should not have been affected, except in the recent files location. You did not mention what operating system you are using, but on Vista and 7 you open your documents folder and type the name or partial name, of the spred sheet into the search window in the upper right corner of the window, and all sheets matching will show up.

How to open Book1.xls file.?

To open an Excel spreadsheet, you need a program that understands the .xls format. You can get the free Excel Viewer from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10 . This is the latest version and will work with computers running Windows XP through Win7. There is a Mac OSX version available but I'm not sure of the URL. If you have an older OS, you can try searching for an older version of the Viewer.

Another option is to install any office suite that includes a spreadsheet program or just the spreadsheet program. Microsoft sells Office in several versions and you can buy Excel separately. There are several other spreadsheet and office suite software options that will also read Excel files. Open Office and LibreOffice are both free office suites which can read any Excel file. (www.openoffice.org and www.libreoffice.org ) Open Office and LibreOffice have versions that work under almost any OS.

I hope this helps.

What is a workbook?

A workbook is a spreadsheet file. By default, each workbook in Excel contains three pages or worksheet

The term spreadsheet is often used to refer to a workbook, when in actual fact, spreadsheet refers to the computer program, such as Excel.

So, strictly speaking, when you open the Excel spreadsheet program it loads an empty workbook file consisting of three blank worksheets for you to use.

Who invented microsoft excel/

Excel is a spreadsheet developed by Microsoft but is by no means the first spreadsheet.

The very first spreadsheet was developed (or invented) by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston called VisiCalc. VisiCalc was a spreadsheet written to operate on the Apple II computer and was released in 1979. The program was sold to Lotus who developed Lotus 123 from the VisiCalc principle. Lotus 123 was released in 1983.

Excel, first released in 1987, is a development of the early spreadsheets and therefore cannot strictly be classified as an invention. Excel is far more powerful than VisiCalc but that is also a result of development over the years that Microsoft have been working on the product, and the increase in computing power.

Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston never patented the product because software patents were almost unheard of in the 70s.
