When it flickers, can you still see the text when the screen goes dark? May have to use a bright flashlight set right on the display to see the text on the screen beside where the light sits. That will tell you if it's the backlight.
You can also look at a grazing angle into one of the edges to see if the backlight is flickering when the display does. When it's cold, does it start with a slight pinkish color? That can be a sign of backlight going bad. Anything interesting happen when you flex the cable by moving the screen?
I'm not saying it's impossible, but I've never seen software cause consistent screen flicker. And if the vga port doesn't flicker, sw is even less likely the problem.
If you bet the odds, you'd bet on a bad display cable. Won't hurt to try replugging it.
If that doesn't help, then your monitor may be dying....

First restart the computer and tap f10 key on keyboard to enter bios, and check wethere the screen flickers or not you can even try to tilt the screen and check as the drivers doesnt works in bios screen ... if the screen flickers then it is a hardware issue .. if it doesnt then log on to safe mode with networking by pressing f8 as the notebook restarts and then go to device manager by typeing device at the start search and the uninstall the video driver and then reinstall it from hp.com support and drivers ..issue will be resolved if not then do a bios update from hp.com, support and drivers.

Hi, i noticed that when I unplugged my HP the screen stopped flickering. I then re-plugged in the power, when to the Nvidia control settings, to PowerMizer, and changed 'ac outlet' to Maximum Power Saving.
Not the world's greatest solution, but hey, working laptop now.
