Question about Whirlpool Washing Machines

1 Answer

The spin cycle doesn't work. Someone recommended that we try looking at the button you push when you close the washer, that makes it stop when you open it. Any other ideas? What else could the problem potentially be? We're trying to figure out if this is a fix-it-yourself job or one for a professional.

This problem is almost always the lid switch. it is something that a diy person can do. unplug the machine and locate the switch and follow the 2 wires to a plug (under the control panel usually).  if you want you can cut the wires and wirer-nut them together to test it. new switch +-$30
2 screws hold the lid switch to the case.

F27 came up nearing the end of the spin cycle and just stops after it's spun but doesn't finish and release.

Close the washer and press the START/PAUSE/Cancel button to remove error displayed and restart the cycle. If it doesn't work, it means that the valve at the water entry needs to be replaced..

Hope this helps..

Loses power in spin cycle

First lid must be down before washer start spinning. Remove any obstructions in drain hose and or straighten drain hose to remove kinks. Lid or other object hit timer knob and turned the washer off - Make sure the Timer knob is pulled out.
If the lid was opened with too much force when adding clothes, it may have hit the timer knob, pushing the knob in.
If a laundry basket or other object hit the Timer knob, the Timer knob may have been pushed in shutting the washer off.
Washer lid is not locked (Not on All Washers) - The lid must be closed and locked for the washer to operate. Once the lid is closed, make sure the desired cycle is still selected and then press the Start button and listen for the lid to lock.
Make sure there are no loose metal objects such as coins and paper clips in the lid opening area. Metal objects can prevent magnetic switches from reacting correctly when the lid is closed.
If the washer has not drained, it will not go into spin.
Use a flashlight to inspect the holes in tub for foreign objects like screws, nails, bra wires, etc. and remove if present.

Washer won't spin

Raise the lid and look for a protruding tab along the edge that lines up with a slot when you close the lid. This tab actuates a safety switch that signals the washer that the "lid is closed" so it's okay to spin. If this tab is broken the switch never gets closed so the washer thinks the lid is up and will not spin for fear of someone attempting to add or remove an article of clothing and being hurt. The washer will fill with water and agitate, it will not make it through the spin cycle, however. When you find the slot, you can depress the switch with a small screwdriver and see if the spin cycle works.

Kenmore 110 Spin Cycle

Assuming that this is a basic top load, direct drive, neutral drain washer it seems as if the problem is likely in the timer.

The transmission and draining are controlled by the motor which gets it's power through the timer. If the timer isn't advancing once it gets to the spin cycle area, the motor keeps getting power, the machine keeps spinning and only by pushing in the control knob will the motor stop.

Here are a couple of places to look at how the machine works and parts for a basic Kenmore washer.

Sears parts site:

Enter your model number and you'll see a number of sub catagories for the washer components.

This is a public domain Whirlpool manual describing how the washer works and a good troubleshooting section.

Washer will not drain

FYI: The lid must be closed for spin on older washer. It must be closed for wash and spin on newer ones. The lid has a striker in it that pushes against the lid switch arm. This switch allows for spin IF the lid is closed. The switch may have failed. Mechanically the striker may be broken or the actuator arm may be broken. The end that the harness plugs into has 3 holes. As you can see above the lid switch has 3 wires. 2 live wires and one green ground. You can jump the washer out using a horseshoe shaped wire or equivilent. Newer models have the ground wire on one end. Not good! Look for that before attempting to jump it out. At any rate their are 3 wires. One of them is always green and always mounted to the frame. The other 2 are live. You can jump them to magically make that puppy spin and pump. Not recommended to leave it that way. For testing purposes only. Some repair pix with manuals.

Front load washer doesn't spin

My Maytag® Neptune® washer filled with water, but it won't spin or drain-what now?

Start by making sure the machine is plugged into a live (working) electrical outlet. Then check the appropriate circuit breaker and reset it if necessary (or check the fuse if you have a fuse box).

Next, inspect the drain hoses and remove any kinks. Take a look at the drain, too - if it's clogged, call your usual drain service person.

Then close the washer door and firmly press the START/STOP button. In a few moments, after the door locks, the washer should begin to spin. (For your safety, the washer will not tumble or spin unless the door is closed and locked.)

If this doesn't work, please contact Customer Service at 1-800-688-9900 for toll-free assistance and service scheduling if necessary.
