Hp pavilion m7330n motherboard issue

My media center edition m7330n broke down about a month ago. the system wouldn't boot up (i got a disk error at startup). i paid a guy $400 to fix it. he told me i needed a new motherboard, which he installed and dropped off at my house. when i turned on the computer i had no sound, no microphone, the dvd drive wasn't there to burn dvd, my memory card reader wouldn't work...

after several sessions with this guy the computer still does not operate correctly. he told me that the problem is the new motherboard isn't compatible with the system. he said i would need to reinstall the operating system and all my programs. i could have bought a new computer for the cost and headache this has caused me. what went wrong? did he not put the correct motherboard in? my media center won't open, it crashes, my dvd drive won't burn, etc etc. it tells me that my video card is i\ncompatible also. He said he also installed a new power supply. now i am out $400 and still cannot use my computer...

My wife's HP m7330n quit two days ago with the same "system won't boot" problem. Additionally, the display was "wavy". I tried a different monitor and the wavy problem persisted. The waviness was not uniform. It would slowly change over time.

Back to the hard disk. Rebooting and attempting to (F10) a recover gets no further than the enabled boot screen. I can get to the BIOS. Reboot several times and the original hard disk is not usually listed. I tried rebooting with a Knoppix Linux disk in the DVD drive. The machine boots. Knoppix is designed to do just this. But the drive may or may not be seen. I have taken the drive, a 250 GB SATA, and added it to another machine and have that machine start up on it. This same drive as a secondary, I can get to the file system and have backed up all the interesting files. (Lucky us!)

Summary: Wavy display. The drive is openable on another non-HP computer. Is it the motherboard? The HP parts web site no longer has in stock the motherboard. Any suggestions for other tests?

Your help is much appreciated! Thanks!

So finally, is the cause or problem with the motherboard or something else? My computer started having the same problem a couple of days ago. Thanks,

The system in question requires motherboard model ms-7184 and can be found on ebay for less than $100.  If your repair guy used a different motherboard you will get the issues described and need to reinstall the OS.  It is impracticle to put any more than $200 in most desktop computers more than 2 years old, your repair guy should have advised you of this straight off.  Find a new person to take your equipment.

My HP media center Running windows 7 says BOOTMGR missing on start

There are a number of possible causes for BOOTMGR errors, including the most common "BOOTMGR is missing" error message.

The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drive sectors an outdated BIOS and damaged or loose IDE cables

Anothe reason you might see BOOTMGR errors is if your PC is trying to boott from a hard drive or flash drive that is not properly configured to be booted from. In other words, it's trying to boot from a non-bootable source. This also would apply to media on an optical drive or floppy drive that you're trying to boot from.

make sure there are no disks in cd floppy usb drives

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs data and power to travel through every working device and to continue its cycle and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
also make sure you have set it boot from you hard drive in BIOS

hope this helps you

At boot-up, HP Digital Media Archive pops up for no apparent reason. Cannot find a way to prevent it.

Have you tried using msconfig to see if it is listed under startup programs? If it is listed you can uncheck it and it will no longer load at start up.

Hi there,

You might want to try to go to the device manager and go to the Universal Serial Bus controllers

Try to uninstall everything and restart the computer.

See if that will let the computer recognise the USB ports.

If that does not work, you might want to reinstall the chipset drivers of your motherboard.

Hope this works for you.

is the usb drive still attached? if so, unplug it from the pc and see if this fixes the boot issue. If so, you most likely have your bios set up to boot from usb first. You can either change this order or remove the usb drive every time you reboot.

Same problem m7330n motherboard packed up !

I really don't like HP. They make **** and will always make ****.
It sounds to me the motherboard is on it's way out.
Sorry, but getting another computer seems to be the only viable option.
I think it's best you shop around for a good computer for your needs.
I can't recommend one to you as I build my own computers for myself and customers.

Problem with window media center installation ?

Hi there
Even if you changed the computers name chances are that won't sort the problem, it sounds to me like a bad install in the first place. I would go with the re-install of the operating system.
You can call your computer whatever you want most people use their name, for example "yourname-PC".
Make sure that the disk and the lens is clean.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!
