Garmin Forerunner 305

I shut mine off after exercising on Friday, 20 June and now it will not power up. I charged it until it states charging complete, and have tried the "soft reset" recommended on this web site, but it still does not power up.

    Thanks for the solution. It worked for me. I've had a problem with mine twice in the last few weeks. The first time I just played around with it, taking it on and off the charger until it finally powered up. It died again today and the reset worked great.

    Thanks for the response. I tried your process multiple times but still no life for my Forerunner 305. I may have to start saving for a new one......maybe the 405.

It wasn't working for me either , but the directions I received wasn't as accurate as some I've seen lately. Ensure:

  • Press mode and reset(lap) at the same time for at least 3 sec. (make sure you press it till you hear that click) 
  • after more than 3 sec. let both go
  • now press the power button and let go
  • wait 3-5 sec, then it will power up-
  • repeat if it doesn't work the first time, the key for me was hitting the power button after the reset and waiting for up to 5 sec after releasing the power button
  • the issue is getting it to work the way it should!

Try SW reset. Hold Mode and lap/reset for 10 seconds, then release and long press start until device restarts.
Should clean up default.

If not try hard reset, but you'll loose all data in device.
hold mode and start for ten second, device needs to off before.
Then keeping these, pulse press lap/reset.
You'll get a confirmation screen

You can soft reset or hard reset the device. Hard reset deletes all data.

Ive not had my garmin 305 long, it will not charge or turn on.
This might just need a reset. To reset the Forerunner or Edge 205/305:
  1. Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable
  2. Press and hold the mode and reset (lap) buttons together for 10 seconds
  3. Release and wait for 3 seconds
  4. There should be some indication of battery charging (either Finished or In Process)
  5. Power the device on while keeping it connected to the computer
In addition, please make sure that the device has the latest software version available by downloading and running the WebUpdater program. To update the software, please use the following link:

Garmin 305 wont power on, wont charge on cradle
Same thing happened to mine. Put the unit in the cradle (just like you are going to recharge it) and press the reset and mode button at the same time for 3 seconds. This will "wake" the unit up.

I had the exact same problem and thought my beloved forerunner 305 had finally died. Try pressing the lap and mode keys simultaneously, and then power on. That may do a "soft reset." Worked for me.

I think that you have got a loose connection on the battery. I had the same problem, took the top off and had a poor connection on one of the battery terminals.

Any jolt would cause it to shut down.

Should be a simple fix if you don't mind going inside!

My husband is the best!  Here's what he did and now it works:
Hold the on/off button and mode button, then hit the lap/reset button.

This will not erase any user data and is most effective if the device is connected to the computer while performing the reset.
To reset the Forerunner or Edge 205/305:

Garmin Forerunner 305 usb cable won't be read
The problem is probably not with the USB cable if the GPS wont even turn on. The older firmware of the Forerunner 205 and 305 have a problem with locking up. This causes the Forerunner to look completely dead. There is a reset procedure: push the mode and reset button at the same time and then let go and hit the power on button. If it powers on that is the problem. Go to the Garmin site and load the newest rev. of firmware into the Forerunner. Fixed mine and a few friends with the same problem.

I do however have a cable problem. Sometimes my PC will come up with unrecognized USB device and my 305 wont talk to the PC, it does charge. It is the cable or dock for sure, because I have tried a different cable/dock and the 305 has no problem. This is the reason I ended up here. I hope the lock fix works for those with the above problem.
