Have a goodman central air unit, non heat pump. keeps smoking transformers, on the inside unit, replaced fan capacitor and transformer as the old transformer was smoked as well. But to no avail the new...


There is a short in the control wiring that needs to be tracked down. Ohm the wiring to the low voltage controls, ie thermostat wiring and thermostat. Try disconnecting the thermostat wires to rule out the problem in the control wiring to the thermostat or thermostat itself, then install a new transformer without connecting the thermostat wiring, jump the red and green wire at the unit low voltage connections to test blower, and then add yellow for compressor, should be no more than 3 amps on control side wiring with A/C on.
If the problems still exists without the thermostat wiring connected then there is a problem in the wiring in the unit or control board itself.

Transformer keeps blowing on the high side after about 15 Min? Have changed out many transformers and blower motor.


Replace the transformer with a 75va resettable transformer.
Check all wiring for a loose connection at the unit and the disconnect and the breaker panel.
Double check ground wires.
Check the low voltage side for a back feed short from a faulty component.
Could be caused from a bad thermostat wire.
Do a continuity reading on stat wires to look for a short.
Do an amp draw reading on the unit to determine an increase in amperage.

I am having trouble with rewiring the air handler transformer and thermostat wires


Here is standard wiring on a low voltage transformer:

"r" on transformer goes to "r" on thermostat (use red wire)
"w"on transformer goes to "w" on thermostat (use white wire) (this is heat)
"y" on transformer goes to "y" on thermostat (use yellow wire) (this is cooling)
"g" on transformer goes to "g" on thermostat (use green wire) (this is the fan)

"c" (if used) goes to "c" or thermostat
"o" (used only on a heat pump)(orange) (reversing valve)

note: on most thermostats if you have an rc and an rh, they both must be jumpered together and use them as "r" (red)

On my therostat it show and talks about the R wire and the Rc wire. What is the differet?


If you would have a two transformer system..... The power wire from the furnace transformer would hook up on R and the power wire from the Air Conditioner transformer would hook up to Rc....

BUT most systems now only have one transformer...... So if you are using this thermostat you will need to put a jumper wire from R to Rc. So the Air Conditioner will work. Furnace is the source of the transformer. R/Rc,W,Y, C, on the Thermostat will Hook up to R,W, Y,C on the furnace and Two wire from the Air Conditioner would hook up on Y and C on the furnace.....Good Luck.

How do you wire a transformer on a carrier unit?


depends if gas or electric on gas u have 120 volts if u have a universal transformer u will hve several wires and on the transformer it will say 120one color 240 another color and common is one color hook black wire to 120 wire and common to ur white wire from unit and ur 2 low voltage wires dont matter if it is electric use the 240 wire and common wire wires from unit dont mater just use the same 2 wires u unhookes and low voltage wires dont matter best advice is to put a 3 amp fuse inline on the low voltage side cause something caused the ransformer to go out and its probably a shorted wire this will blow the fuse instead of burning up the transformer

Typical Thermostat Wiring for 4 or 5 wire Heat/Cool Thermostat (not heat pumps)
4 Wire Termostat
R = Red One Side of 24 volt Transformer
G = Green Blower
Y = Yellow Cool
W = White Heat
5 Wire Thermostat
with one transformer for both units
Rc One Side of 24 volt Transformer
Rh Jumper Rc to Rh
G = Green Blower
Y = Yellow Cool
W = White Heat
5 Wire Thermostat
With 2 transformers one for indoor unit
And one for outdoor unit
Rc = Red One Side of (outside) 24 volt (outside transformer)
G = Green Blower (outside transformer)

Trying to figure out thermostat wiring diagham on a split system

Blown Transformer heat pump


blown transformers are usually from a low voltage short the first thing i would do is wire a automotive or resetable 3amp fuse in line with the transformer so you dont blow transformer after transformer the wire coming off the transformer that say 24v take that wire a couple of inches down and cut it and install the fuse in series there

now you can go through your low voltage wires one by one and test them unhook all the wires to your outdoor condenser at your indoor unit(furnace or airhandler) and try turning it to cool now if you blow the fuse the short is between the tstat and the indoor unit if the fuse is still good leave it on cool and hook up one wire at a time to your outdoor unit starting with R a lot of times your contactor or your defrost board will short out on you also look for pinches in wires wires with cracks in the insulation and wires touching metal this situation can be a real pain sometimes i would recommend calling a hvac company if you start to get stumped

Will a short/ground in the thermostat wires cause a model(-) HQA to burn up the 24 volt transformer


If the transformer wires are shorted together, this will burn up the transformer. Normally transformers on the LV side (24 volt) are not grounded, but the solenoids that they control could be grounded, and a t-stat wire that is unintentionally grounded could burn up the transformer, but its not likely.

You have a "Multi-Tap" transformer, and should have a white label on it with wiring.
