Question about Gateway 400SD4 Notebook
I droped my laptop(Gateway 400SD4 PC Notebook). When i go to turn it on it beeps 3 times with about 1 sec. between each beep and nothing appears on the screen. When i connect a regular pc moniter it doesn't get a signal. What is that telling me? is there anything i can do? and what are the beeps teelling me? A reply would be greatly appreciated. __THANX
It means you need service. You can get it from a local shop, laptop tech or just call Gateway, who eventually, will give you direction should you be under warranty.
If you're not under warranty, do get a hold of a laptop tech or go to a good shop.
Chances are good you've damaged your hard drive, most everything else can take a fall like this, as long as the screen is intact. Some techs have the tools, most do actually, to recover what ever data is on there to recover or pronounce the state of your hard drive. Data can be recovered if it comes to that but it is expensive despite the ads on the net for cheap data recovery. It usually will run you closer to 500 or even 800 dollars to get data off.
Anyway a replacement hard drive is cheaper than the cost to put your laptop back into service again.
You can do a search on the internet for 'beep codes' should you want to know more, but they're specific to BIOS maker and you may not know who made yours. Gateway motherboards are made in China for Gateway and these codes are a bit esoteric, but usually four beeps means your display adapter is at faults. Logic states the part at highest risk in a fall is the hard drive and we can't help you determine that unless you have another 2 /12 inch hard drive sitting around that runs, say in an external backup drive?

You probably knocked something loose when you dropped it. Try re-seating your memory cards. 3 beeps is usually a memory issue.
