You have two computers doing the same thing? Is the WLAN disabled in software? I recently had a similar issue, it didn't list in Device Manager, I opened the Sony all-in-one , removed the Wireless Adapter Card and used some Electronic Contact Cleaner to clean the card contacts, reinserted the card and so far it's working. Yes you do have to keep up with the tiny screws. Question, Why rely on a neighbors wireless? That would be a unknown in the troubleshooting procedure that must be eliminated. Although, it may be a hardware gremlin, as you suspect. But two computers with the same issue? Sound like a Wireless signal issue? How many devices are running on the Wireless signal? .
hi,<br />
<br />
Move the Wi-Fi switch to the "On" position. Not all models have this switch.<br />
<br />
<br />
Open the Windows Start menu and select "Connect To." A list of available <br />
<br />
connections will appear.<br />
<br />
<br />
Select "All" from the drop-down menu to view all available networks and <br />
<br />
connections within range.<br />
<br />
Select the desired network and click "Connect." Enter the security passphrase if <br />
<br />
prompted and click "Connect" again to join the network and gain wireless <br />
<br />
Internet access.<br />
<br />
<br />
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the <br />
<br />
issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response<br />

Check the sides and front of the laptop to see if there is a wireless switch to turn on. If so, turn it on.
Also once the wireless switch is turned on there are
keystrokes that can toggle the wireless on or off. Normally you would
Press and Hold the FN function key located at the lower left of the keyboard,
then hit the correct F1 thru F12 key that toggles the wireless. The
correct F1 thru F12 key to hit will have the wireless signal icon )))) on it.
Or it might have the icon of a tower with the wireless signal icon )))).
Normally the screen will display Wireless On or Wireless Off when you toggle
the wireless.
Good ole Windows 7, just a tad bit better than Vista. I would never get rid of my Windows XP Operating System to be on either of those unstable operating systems.
OK, so are you near the wireless router, if not go near it and then try to connect. If you don't see it as one of your available wireless networks, then you have to make sure that the Wireless Switch is turned on.
If you are sure it is turned on, then there are also keystrokes that turn the wireless on and off. Normally you would Press and Hold the FN function key then hit the correct F1 thru F12 key that toggles the wireless. The correct F1 thru F12 key will have the wireless icon on it such as )))) or it might be a tower with ))) around it. Normally when you toggle the wireless by keystrokes your screen will display something like Wireless On or Wireless Off.
If you still have problems download and reinstall the wireless drivers. Get onlineand got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "HPSupport" (without the quotes and put your manufacturer name before Support). Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operatingsystem when requested. Download and install the Wireless drivers.
LOL, wifi does not work off a network cable. The network cable is used for a local connection to a modem or router. Wifi doesn't not require a cable. Did it use to work? Have you checked on both sides of the laptop and in front of the laptop to make sure you have not turned the wifi switch off if there is one? Have you checked to make sure you have not hit the FN (Function Key) + (F1 thru F12 function key) that toggles the wifi on an off? When you Press the FN key and hold it down while pressing the Function Key that corresponds to toggling the wireless normally it will display on the screen Wireless On or Wireless Off. The correct key should have a wireless signal icon like )))) on it. That's the key you want to hit while holding the FN key.
you should reinstall the wireless drivers on your laptop go to the hp support site and type in the model number (it can be found on the white service tag under the laptop)

Verify that the radio is enabled. It is possible to disable the transmitter of the wireless card without Device Manager showing any problems. Note: Follow the instructions provided to enable wireless card.
Most wireless cards will put an icon in the system tray
(the line of icons in the lower right corner of your screen). Right
click this icon and it may have a menu option to enable/turn on the
wireless radio.
Some systems come with a Wireless Radio switch to disable
the wireless radios. The wireless radio switch is usually located on the
front side of the machine. If you are having difficulties with wireless
connections, make sure the Wireless Radio switch is set in the On
position.
