Do you get a blue screen when it shuts off? or... does the monitor just turn off, or does the computer tower and everything turn off?

If everything turns off,(like a normal shutdown) try checking your power options in the control panel, to make sure there aren't some power saving settings that are causing it.

If its a blue screen type issue, then there may be a hardware problem that is causing the computer to shutdown to avoid further damage to the system.

it sounds like your motherboard is shutting itself off to protect itself from overheating or some other system failure. you should verify all your fans are running at the correct speed. if it seems like everything is running fine, you can probably turn that off in bios. obviously if there is something wrong with the fans, then you need to replace them. Another options is maybe the processor is getting too hot which is why it's shutting down. open the case and remove the heat sync from the board so you can see the processor. clean the thermal paste off the processor and apply a new generous layer. put the heat sync back on and then try and restart. make sure before you do ANY of this you unplug the computer! good luck and let me know if it works!

SYSTEM TRIES TO COME ON BUT ONLY MAKES IT TO THE CONFIGURING SCREEN THEN IT SHUTS ITSELF BACK DOWN, THIS IS CONTINUOUS. I have a Dell Inspiron 531. Please advise. Thank you, Candace

It sounds like it could be a problem with overheating, which is causing the machine to turn itself off. Try opening the side cover, and carefully cleaning the motherboard and especially the CPU fan - which is the large fan probably on top of a silver box with loads of fins on it. Carefully remove the dust, and see if this clears up the problem. It may be worth removing and refitting the memory whilst the computer is open, to reduce the problems of bad connections between the cards.

If it doesn't fix it, then reply here with any error messages that pop up on the screen.

I have an Acer Aspire 5735. I use it everyday for my work, however over the last few months it has started to turn itself off. The fan starts to hum loudly for a few seconds and then it shuts down. I have...

The way you describe the problem, with the fan getting noticeably louder then shutting the computer down entirely, sounds like an overheating issue; the fan spins up to top speed to try and cool the system down, fails to do so, and the machine shuts itself down as a safety precaution.

Propping it up might have provided it with a bit more airflow, which may be why you experience the shut downs a little less frequently. I would invest in a can of compressed air, which can be found at any office supply store, and blow out the exhaust vents on your laptop. If you've never cleaned your machine before, dust and other debris that accumulates in the vents and around the fan have probably built up enough to restrict air flow.

15 to 20 mins screen will go blank and will have A black screen reboot and it will work 10 or 15 mins. RELOADED XP AND THIS DID NOT HELP, SAME PROBLEM

Your Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop computer is overheating. It is shutting itself down to prevent component failure.

Ensure that the Processor heat sink is clean of dust so sufficient air can flow through the heatsink and cool the processor.

Install additional fans in your computer 120mm are best but 80mm fans will do fine.

Clean the computer chassis of dust as well.

Thanking you

My Toshiba P35-S611 shuts down without warning a short time (2 min-45 min) after it boots up. The battery isn't hot but the heat dissipation fins in the back are very hot.

Indications of laptop overheating problem:
  1. The keyboard and the bottom of your laptop are very hot when the laptop is working.
  2. The CPU fans are working all the time at maximum rotation speed and operate much louder than before.
  3. The laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning. When it just started, the laptop was shutting down after 1-2 hours and how it shuts down after 5-10 minutes of operation.
  4. The laptop works fine when it runs idle, but shuts down as soon as you start using any memory demanding applications (DVD player, image editing software, video editing software, etc.).

Solution:
If the CPU heatsink is not clogged with dust and lint completely, you can use canned air and just blow it inside the laptop through the openings on the bottom and on the sides. It’s nice as a precaution measure, but it might not work if your laptop already has a problem and the heatsink is completely clogged.
  1. Open the laptop case, so you can access the CPU fan and the heatsink. In some cases you can access the heatsink through the latch on the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes (for example Toshiba Satellite A70/A75) you have to open the laptop case all the way down.
  2. Carefully disconnect the fan cables on the system board and remove the fan. If the fan makes unusual sound when it spins (grinding sound), I would recommend to replace the fan.
  3. Clean the fan and the heatsink with compressed air.
  4. I would also recommend removing old thermal grease from the CPU and applying new grease for better heat conductivity.

Laptop shut down on its own

Classic case of overheating.

Turn over notebook and remove bottom covers. clean out heatsinks near the fan.

The fan usually looks very clean, but look inside the fan housing and you'll probably find a blanket of lint/dust completely blocking the air passageways (even if they look clean from the outside).

If you remove the heatsink off the chips make sure you put on new thermal paste.

Some models it is very easy to get to the fans, others you have to fully disassemble the notebook

You could also try cleaning it out from the outside with an aircompressor, just leave it off for a day in case the is any moisture in the aircompressor lines. This may fix it but if its really clogged, you will need to open the unit and manually clean it.

When i on the system, the fan is not rolling, sometime when on and boot upto the the window evironment, its shut itself down. what could be the possible problem with them

Please Check CPU making any noise or not.

remove the CPU side door and check Fan is rotating on Processor if not it may not rotate due to heavy dust inside. ( clean it and refix it)

Check SMPS Fan is rotating or not..

If fans or not rotating Heat Builds up then computer shuts down itself.

If both fans are working...Just Open BIOS window by press DEL button continuosly while startup and wait for 2 to 3 minutes If the computer shuts down Itself in BIOS Window also then we can confirm issue with Hardware.

If Computer not shutting down in BIOS Window then issue with Operating System Boot files corrupted.

While Turn ON the system press F8 to enter in Safe Mode.

Open command prompt by clicking on

Start >. RUN >> type cmd >> then press enter.

now type chkdsk /f

now press Y

then reboot PC it fixes the Boot files error then your PC works perfectly.

If you still exp same issue let meknow..
