Look at it from the point of view of the manufacturer. Having made thousands if not hundreds of thousand from the same mold/die, it would be more economically reasonable for them to replace the entire board rather than repair. The problem to the consumer is soon as warranty is over, the problem drops to your lap. Your conclusion of a manufacturing defect indicates that you have made a research and therefore would also have known the exact section/component causing this. Additional corrective measure other than replacing the board would be to "beef" up/upgrade/enhance that section/component, but this of course would require extensive knowledge of the electronics involved. If it were heat related, improve/increase forced air ventilation, if it were BIOS related, upgrade/downgrade to a more stable version, if it were performance related, set settings to default or in general downgrade usage but upgrade specs. Say originally Vista, back down to XP, use a docking station with additional blowers, add think heatsink on chipsets, and a few other "make do".
Since you have not posted the exact model/version the above of course would be generic.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
