Weather King question?

We have had this unit for about 5 years or so--since day one we have had problems with it. We had the compressor replaced and it heat good this winter now we turn on the cool and it runs cold for awhile and then it starts shooting out warm air. Outside the fan has stopped running and it making funny squealing sounds. You can shut off the whole unit and then it will take awhile before you can get it to start back up. Had the guy come out that installed it--he thought that it might be the fan motor so he replaced the fan--still does the same thing. Any ideas?? He thought that it might be the circuit board?? Could this be it? Any other ideas on what it could be?? Getting tired of messing with it & not having heating/cooling.
Thanks, Kay

I have RUUD furnace with build in coil for air conditioner and Weather King compressor outside of my condo. ALL EQUIPMENT IS 4 YEARS OLD I didn't have any problem with heat at winter, but in summe

When you remove the panel to the unit it turns off the power to it. The reinstalling the panel will reconnect power and allow the unit to reset. So the cheapest and easiest thing you can try is to replace the thermostat. Make sure you see how many wires you have connected to your existing tstat and buy near the same thing. It's possible that the tstat is acting up, not allowing the unit to cool when the temp demands. And turning off power is resetting the tstat as well as the unit. It will be hard to troubleshoot with the info provided so a new tstat will be worth a shot. Hope this helps!

How do I find out if my unit is still under warranty?

All you need to do is copy down the model and serial number and call the local weather king rep or even a dealer and they can tell you. Most units have a minimum of 5 year compressor warranty and 1 year on parts. Many units have 10 year compressor warranty and 5 year parts. It would be worth your while to check. Hope this helps.

Weather king #10PJA3101 /serial #6811 M1903 10232 from 1993. Needs a new compressor is it still under warranty?

Hi, I am sorry to say that the compressor on a new unit comes with a factory warranty of only 1 year. You can purchase a extended warranty of an extra 4 years, but you have to do that of the time you bought the unit.
Sincerely,

I JUST HAD A GUY COME OUT HERE AND SAID MY COMPRESSOR WAS BAD, HE SAID I MIGHT AS WELL REPLACE THE WHOLE UNIT CAUSE THERE WAS ONLY $400-600 DIFFERNCE IN REPLACING THE UNIT COMPARED TOT HE COMPRESSOR. THE...

better replace a whole unit, than you have guarantee on whole unit not just on compressor.
And your unit is old 8 years, replace it and you have a new.
It is also my suggestion.

Compressor freezes up at night and some during day.

You are being ripped off. The ambient (outdoor) temperature at night is low and therefore proper condensing does not take place causing the refrigerant to pool in the condenser and starving the evaporator. This causes a lower temperature in the evaporator resulting in "freeze up" which is often mistaken for a loss of refrigerant.
The proper thing to be done is to block off the condenser air causing the high side pressure to rise until the eqivillant of 110*F condensing temperature.
You can also install a low ambient kit which will cycle the compressor off when the temperatures fall

Warranty and repair

call the company that installed the unit first. if they wont pony up any reputable hvac service company can honor the warranty. the manufacturer will give him a free compressor and you will have to pay him labor to install it.

Warranty on compressor

The actual age of your unit can be determined by the serial number. Based on the age indicated there they can tell you if the warranty is still valid. Your local Rheem/weather king dealer can do this for you. Most compressor warranties are either 5 or 10 years. Good Luck!
