I have the same problem. I was told it is a defective CCD. Sony apparently recalled this item but did not do it publicly. I contacted Sony just the other day and was told the recall had expired. They would not fix the problem free of charge. Instead, the charge would be $151.00. I then asked to speak to someone that could waive the fee since the part was defective on Sony's end. The customer service representative told me they could not waive the fee to fix the problem because the recall expired. The only thing he was willing to do was to drop $50.00 of the cost of the repair. I have contacted Sony via a feedback form I found on their website, still waiting for a response. Does anyone know if this problem is something I can fix on my own. I refuse to pay $100.00 for something that I can buy new for just a little more. Thank you

I had same problem. Got lucky and found Westpeak Electronic
Services in Calgary, AB in Sept 2009. I left it there, they replaced and aligned the ccd imager free of charge and mailed it to me a week later. I live in British Columbia.
Their number is 866-410-Sony

Hope this helps

When I turn my camera on and try to record, nothing shows up on the screen.

Make sure lens cover is open, if still camcorder does not show live view then it is bad ccd imager chip problem that will be replaced.
Let me know exact model of your Sony camcorder to provide you part number info of ccd imager chip.
Thanks.

Can't transfer recorded video to CD

This is a problem with the type of drives that are supported by the Picture Package software (assuming this is what you are using to transfer the video). This camcorder came with Picture package 1.0 which does not support quite a few drives (the entire list is available at www.ppackage.com). I think your drive will also fall under the same list of unsupported drives.

Black and white playback with sony handycam dcr-hc20

There is no problem on your camera, DCR-HC19E is PAL system(European system) DCR-HC20 is NTSC(American system). Are you in US or Europe? I think your TV is NTSC, cause the tape recorded on DCR-HC19E you played has no color. To confirm, connect your HC20 to TV in camera mode, not recording yet, just look at the TV as your monitor, If its in color, no problem, just erase the old video recorded on the HC19E, but if its important to you, you can convert it to NTSC using a PC. thanks
