In the menu for initial setup look for a setting for center channel and turn it off. If it is on you will have no sound because it turns the TV speaker into the center speaker for a surrond sound receiver input.

This would be weird for a sony but it sounds like the volume down button on the front of the set is stuck...very very uncommon for a sony. Try taking the bottom front cover off the set and unpluging the button assyembly then see if the remote works the set with it unpluged.

It sounds like the convergence amplifier IC for the red crt is at fault. To check this, go into your user menu and pull up the red convergence. Try to move it up/down or side to side(it doesnt matter). If it moves up and down, then the vertical amp is working. Likewise if it moves side to side, then the horizontal part of the IC is working. If it dosen't move at all, or only moves up/down or side to side, then the IC is bad.
There are 2 large IC's on the chassis, mounted to large heatsinks. They have STK392-110 or some variation of an STK392. If yow feel that the IC is bad, change the ic BEFORE you go into the service mode, as you wont need it if the ic is bad.
To get into theservice mode:
1 make sure tv is in cable mode
2 set sleep timer to 30 minutes
3 tune to channel 124
4 use volume down on front of set to turn volume all the way down. ( writing will appear in the top left corner).
5 use remote control and press the power button.
6 the 7 button on the remote will put it convergence mode.
If the channel and volume visual display was not set up on the menu to display on screen , neither will show up even if either the remote or set front button are used.
Make sure that the tv button is selected on the remote to access the menu .If that does not work ,then either the batteries are dead or the remote is dead.If it is you will need a new remote, sadly.
Then you can press the m button , select sound and then select "display volume" and check "during adjustment". The channel display settings are found on "features" from the main menu.
Hope this helps.
