Take the cartridge back out. There are little contacts that allow the machine to know that the toner is in. Check to see that these are making contact between the cartridge and the machine itself. unplug it to do a hard reset too. Or smash it with your fist over and over to jar loss any poor connections!

Hi, maybe the roner cartridge you inserted is not supported by Toshiba e-Studio 170f. This may be one of the reasons that the machine can't recognize the toner cartridge. Reinstall the toner cartridge that you have. If that doesn't fix the issue try to replace the toner cartridge with new one. If you continue experiencing this issue contact your technical support team.
if you have changed the drum/toner unit then the machine should have a fuse on top of the drum unit.I have come across some cartridges that don't have them on the unit. The fuse resets the fax so that it knows there is a new unit installed. If that does work then clear the machines memory using the control panel
with machine on, open front cover, press the "options" button, you should see "replace drum?" press the "start" key then 1 then 0. display should show accepted for a couple of secs. then show cover open. close front cover and message should be gone. if not, you will have to contact Brother.
You need to use the [MENU], [< >] and [ENTER] keys to browse
through the unit's menu. Find and enter the "System Setup" menu and
then search for the "Ignore Toner" option. Press [ENTER] and change the
setting to "ON". Press [ENTER to confirm, the, [STOP/CLEAR] to get out
of the menu system. The unit should start printing all faxes in memory.
Now, if the unit does not clear the "Toner" error, you might be using a compatible toner that might not be as compatible as it should be. However , if the new toner is Samsung original, let me know for there might be another solution.
Make sure that you are not using generic supplies. Using generic supplies or supplies that have been refilled will cause the unit to give false errors. There is white piece of plastic inside the semi circular opening, if you do not see a white semi circular opening it is either a generic toner or starter toner and you will need to replace the toner with a authentic toner.
You may try this also:
1. Remove the drum and toner, separate the drum and toner and then rock the toner from side to side.
2 Put the drum and toner back together and clean the corona wire ten times.
3 Put the drum and toner back inside the machine and close the cover, if you still have toner life end try this:
a Open the front cover
b press the options key, the LCD will say "replace drum?"
c press the start key. and then press 10 on your dial pad. the display should say accepted for about 2 seconds and then say cover open.
d close the cover, if the display still has toner life end, you will need to replace the toner
