Ge wall unit cools and then stops

Is this worth calling a repair person for? the unit is 5 years old with very minimal use. i live in wisconsin and we have cold winters. could the below zero weather have ruined the unit? is it best to have it repaired or replaced. this is a 13,000 unit.

Weather below 50 deg F can harm airconditioners if you run them. If the unit is turned off, then the weather can get as cold as it wants to and not damage the unit. Also 99.999% of the time repair costs on wall units surpass the cost of replacing the unit. This is even accounting for the fact that you will have to pay $25 to $50 to get rid of the old a/c. 5 yrs isn't that bad for a wall shaker anymore. Suggest looking for a new unit.

Unfortunately, nobody really puts alot of effort into building the window and wall units. A major portion of the expense in repairs is that the mfr does not take the time or effort to put in standard service accesses when building the unit. Installing these accesses once the system has been sealed and pressurizes is difficult and costly. I would probably look for a "cheap" unit as the life expectancy isn't that great. As far as recomending a specific brand over another, I don't really feel strongly enough about any one brand to do so.

I have an old (25 yrs or so) through the wall Whirlpool ac. I plugged it in and it runs and cools but it is noisy. Sounds like the fan is hitting or something. When I switched from Hi cool to Low cool...

A through the wall AC unit that has lasted 25 years or so? That's amazing and unheard of !!!

iI it's tripping a circuit breaker, there's an electrical problem with one of the circuits, within the unit and that can be dangerous. Certainly repairing it is an option. But, at 25 years old, I doubt that there are many parts for that model left in existence. Not to mention that the cost of troubleshooting it, parts and labor may cost almost as much or more, as a new Energy Efficient unit would cost.

You have to admit, you got your monies worth out of it over the past 25 years. So, if it were me making the decision, I'd opt for a new Energy Efficient model, with the same cooling capacity as your old one.

Hope this helped you. Please let me know. Thanks.

I have a Bryant split system AC that is 18 years old. We have been away all summer (2 1/2 months), during which time the thermostat was set to 80°F. We live in SE Virginia and summer temps are 80's...

I am a service manager of a richmond va hvac firm and we tell are employess that if a unit is over 15 yrs old and needs over 500 dollors worth of repair to recomennd replacement the reason the leak repair is so much is because the unit has to have all the refrigerant pulled out and a torch is needed to weld the piping back together in some cases if the leak is in the coil heating it can cause other leaks you also have to add driers to the system and then the environmental fees and rules that the epa makes us follow make prices even worse if you do fix it you probally wont even get a warranty on the repair. I would replace the system and also if cost of repairs are a concern ask the company about a 10 yr part and labor warranty

Blower no cool

Chances are the tech said it was a "capacitor".
That is one of the few (and minor) parts that routinely go bad and would be no suprise with a 17 month old unit. Nearby lightening strikes or power surges can cause them to fail. That is true with all brands.

(the condensor is the entire outdoor unit)

Goodman systems typically come with a 1 year all parts warranty, and a 10 year compressor warranty.

Since your unit is 17 years old the capacitor is not under warranty. (unless you purchased an extended warranty plan of some kind.)

$90 is reasonable compared to the typical going rate for a capacitor replacement and service call.

I have a 3 year old UBHC. I live in Florida and

If the outdoor unit isn't coming on then you need to have a tech come out and check that the unit is being called to come on. If not, then you need to check that the tstat is calling for cool. If it is then there could be a short in the wirning to the ouside unit. If it is being called to come on and the outdoor unit's compressor is kicking on but the fan motor doesn't, then it could be as simple as a capacitor or the motor could be bad. Either way, it sounds as though you may need to call for a service professional.

Old unit blowing air, not cooled

You will have to contact the manufacture to get the age. The age can be determined through the serial number of that unit but often, only the manufacture can tell you. Window units are so inexpensive these days so I would recommend replacing it if you have done everything in regards to general maintenance of the unit like cleaning the indoor coil and rinsing out the coils at the back of the unit. Also, if you can get to the fan blades safely, they usually need a good cleaning as well. If you have done all this and it still doesn't cool, then I would replace it. I personally like the LG brand window units.

Goodman heat pump 5 ton power problem

Sound like the outside unit is going to ground or the unit is over amping. Take and shut off the power to the unit and check all of the electrical connection for tightness. Don't forget to check the disconnect wires too since you shut it off at the breaker box. If you have a meter check to see if it''s live before you work on it. If it's all tight then call back the person that did the previous repair and tell them that he obviously missed something and the you feel that it should be a warranty call.
