These analog cameras were not meant to be connected to a PC. There were meant for connection to TV or VCR. If you trying to editing analog footage on a computer, i would recommend using a capture box like PINNACLE DAZZLE.

You may have solved this problem already but I had the same problem some time ago, so the advice will be a little vague.
From memory the issue is something to do with corruption of a directx file so you could just try re-loading directx.
But the way I found a solution was to try and capture video using windows movie maker and you will find the video capture also fails using this software. However, windows returns an error message (which I cannot remember), and I did a search on Google or something for this error message and eventually found the solution.
It was related to directx and there was a small file that had to be run to repair it.
Hope this helps and I will continue searching for the problem I am now having with my camera not accepting a tape and returning the error message relating moisture......
You can transfer video from the camera to your pc by using an i.Link connection if your camera has it or you can use the supplied usb wire to connect it to your pc and transfer the video that way. If you do not have the cord it is easily obtainable at any camera repair or sales store.
Sony's website says: "Some digital
camcorders must be setup to output a signal through the i.LINK® port
prior to being connected to a computer. Consult the instruction manual
of your camcorder for specific information before continuing with the
steps in this solution. Instruction manuals are available in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
Ensure the i.LINK cable is connected securely to the camcorder and computer.
Ensure the camcorder is turned on and being powered by the supplied AC power adapter.
Ensure the video capture card and software are configured properly to receive the i.LINK signal from the camcorder.
on the video capture card and software you are using, you may need to
manually configure the capture card and software to receive a signal
from the i.LINK port. If applicable, check the Help files of the software or contact the video capture card or software manufacturer for further information.
digital camcorders are not provided with and do not require special
device drivers for i.LINK connectivity. The device drivers that allow
i.LINK connectivity should be provided with the video capture software.
If the software you are using does not appear to have the required
drivers, you will need to contact the software manufacturer.
Likely this is the case where the camcorder needs to be setup in order to connect to the Firewire port. This is done inside the menus. Windows XP and Windows Vista will detect a camcorder connected to a Firewire port automatically. Make sure your camcorder is powered up and configured before connecting it. Does your PC have a Firewire port? Many do not, PCI cards with firewire ports can be bought online or from local retailers. Some sound cards come equipped with one.
Since VHSC camcorders feature only analog outputs: it is not possible to connect the camcorder directly to a PC (unless a computer video card is equipped with analog inputs). The only way to transfer images from the camcorder to a PC will be using an external device capable of analog/digital signal conversion. JVC has released a capture device model, GV-CB3U which has the capability of video capture of a single frame in either Bitmap or JPEG format. The GV-CB3 can be connected to any video source through a standard video or S-Video connector and download single image to a PC using serial port (RS232C communication port). The JLIP Video Capture software necessary to transfer images to the computer as well as connecting cables are supplied with this product. You can also use 3rd party hardware (Video Capturing device) to send information from your camera to a PC. Visit your local PC or Office store for more information on other video capturing devices.
