Question about Fax Machines

1 Answer

I have a Canon MP730. This machine shares the telephone line with my telephone desk set. The fax machine wants to activate when the telephone rings. I have the settings on the fax machine set to manual mode vs auto receive.. Any ideas on how to correct this problem.

How can I get the telephone on my Brother Fax T96 to work?

Step by step information at the link below.
Brother Fax T96
The F/T Mode is used to allow the fax machine and the telephones to share the same telephone line. When a call comes in, the fax machine and all extension telephones on that line will ring according to the number of rings you have set for the Ring Delay.
When the Ring Delay is completed, the fax machine will answer the call and determine if it is a fax call or a telephone (voice) call.
The fax machine can determine this by the signal it is receiving on the telephone line. If someone is sending a fax automatically , the sending fax machine will transmit a fax tone (a series of beeps every 3 seconds).
If your fax machine hears these tones, it will receive the fax.

If the fax machine does not hear any fax tones, it assumes it is a telephone (voice) call and will begin ringing the F/T ring tones (double ring) for the length of time you selected for the F/T Ring Time. These tones will only ring on the fax machine's handset (extension or external phones will not ring). At the end of the F/T ring time the fax machine will go into the receive mode in order to receive a manual fax.
(If the call was a voice call and was not answered, the caller will hear the fax receive tones also).
  • If you answer the call before the fax machine(during the ring delay period) and determine it is a fax, you can transfer the fax to the fax machine for receiving.

  • If you answer the call on an "extension" phone and hear a beep every 3 seconds (automatic fax) or silence (manual fax), press *51 or *91 for New Zealand (remote activation code) on the telephone keypad, wait to hear the fax machine turn on (chirping sounds) and then hang up.

  • If you answer on the handset of the fax machine and hear a beep every 3 seconds or silence, press the Fax Start or Start/Copy key on the control panel of the fax machine and then hang up the handset.

  • If you answer a call on an "extension" phone during the F/T Ring Time, you will hear the F/T ring tones.
To release the call from the fax machine, press #51 or #91 for New Zealand (remote deactivation code) on the telephone keypad and you can speak to the calling party.

  • If you pick up the handset of the fax machine during the F/T ring time, you may talk to the calling party immediately.

1. Machine is on telephone line shared with a 3 handset cordless Uniden system so telephone may be answered around the house. The machine no longer rings when calls come in so we only here the Uniden...

These machines come with several receiving modes that can be programmed ... mostly by design but quite often ... by accident.

I would check the User Manual for Ring Patterns, Silent Reception and Fax Priority.
You can always see or print out the Option Settings of your facsimile. There it will show the exact picture of what the fax must know before answering the incoming call.
Does it have Fax Tone Detection? Is it set for automatic answering? Faxback? Polling?

Maybe a power hickup might have scrambled some of the programmed features?
Obviously nobody in the location monkeyed around with tha fax buttons, right?
By George. Of course not!

Please feel free to contact me anytime.

There is a fax tone when dialling our telephone number.

Set your fax to MANUAL MODE. You will have to press START when you know you are getting a fax.

This is the only way it will work without a dedicated fax line.

How do i set up fax to automaticely receive faxes after several rings

For a phone line dedicated only to the fax machine, the process is as follows:
  1. Press Menu/Set, 0, 1.
  2. You will see the Fax Receive window
  3. Use UP and DOWN arrows to change the setting to FAX ONLY
  4. Press Menu/Set.
  5. Press STOP/EXIT
Your fax machine will now answer every incoming call.
If the fax machine is sharing the phone line with a telephone, repeat the above steps and change from FAX ONLY to FAX/TEL This option will allow you to share the line with a phone only, not an answering machine. Once in FAX/TEL mode, the fax machine will still grab every incoming FAX call, and give a special ring (slightly different than a regular telephone ring) when it's a regular incoming phone call signaling you to answer the phone. I hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck!

Fax is printing other fax machine's outbond faxes

Yikes!! Get your phone company involved. Remember that a fax machine uses a normal home style phone line. Something is seriously messy with the phone lines in the building

Sending faxes

You can hook a fax to any standard phone line. That is what they are designed for. The only issue is if you share the fax with your telephone, you will need to set the machine up to receive the fax before you answer the phone.

Hooking up a fax machine on home telephone line

Well... the problem is that you are running two machines on one line. ONE of them has to take predominance. Both machines should have settings for "number of rings to answer at". It sounds like you currently have the fax set to less than the answering machine, so the fax picks up after two rings, while your answering machine might be set to more, which it never gets to, because the fax answered the call already(It doesn't matter if you answer the phone, or the fax picks up, once the line is open, the answering machine is taken out of the equation). Even if you set the answering machine to answer first, you're then taking the fax service out of the loop. I'm not sure how you're going to juggle that, since both types of machines each need control over the line to work properly. That's why we (business machine folk) always recommend a dedicated line for fax service.
