Did they really design this gem with no Refill or drain? Being totally inexperienced with such technology, I left the machine on its side while replacing the motor. The oil drained, likely from weak seal.. lost about 1/2 liter. There appears to be a machined drain plug at a low point in the transmission casting but it seams to need a socket or special tool that I have never seen. I really dont want to start the machine with out replacement...any advice?
The vent on top is where they always leak from and I have a running experiment with this as my whirlpoot bled to death 4 years ago and I have not replaced the gear case yet, I think it is quieter now too. Word of advice. A replacement is around 150 bucks and right now there is 20,000 new gear cases out there that are defect sitting in stores and warehouses, I would by a rebuild at 75% of that price and have piece of mind. You have experienced the motor replacement so I won't discuss that but for a gear case you would have to get either a 7/16 or 1/2 inch deep well socket with an extension to remove the agitator carefully not dumping the little pieces, dogs that allow agitation. Once removed you will see a floating metal clip and a plastic catch to pull off. Then instead of laying machine on its side pull it out two feet and tilt it back to work on it. Oh and the gearcase has three 1/2 inch bolts to remove where it slides out and then swapping out the clutch package. The clutch has five pieces and you only need three. See this link for a picture of the pack. http://www.repairclinic.com/SmartSearch/SSPartDetail.aspx?PartID=2670&PPStack=1
When replacing there is a flanged clear piece that snaps into the metal clutch base and then slides on the gear case spindle followed by a wire snap clip that when the one straight end is inserted into the hole a flat head screw driver can guide the circular part around until the final push to snap it in. Next is a c clip which aligns with a grove on the spindle and finally a cover and the rest is a reversal of the removal.
