Another thing you can try is this:

move your mouse over to a section on the screen and press the right mouse button. Click on properties. Select the appearence tab. Press the Effects button. Make sure that use large icons isn't checked. Press ok after your changes are made.

There are addition settings that can change this well if that doesn't work depending on what your video card is in your computer.

How do I get my icons on after computer has gone to sleep?

If you are using xp try going to control panel, change the desktop background to anything else in the offered menu, click apply. Then do the same thing again and select the background you normally use. That will sometimes get the icons back up.

Desktop screen

try booting in safe mode and see if the screen displays properly.

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal.

Try connecting another monitor to the computer. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the computer. If the Borrowed monitor shows the 1 inch black space then your video card might be going bad or you might have a virus infection. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok then your original monitor is bad.

flashing amber normally just means it has gone into standby because it's not getting a valid signal, when you bought the other monitor did you use a different vga/dvi cable when you plugged it in? are both inputs the same? for more information on the padlock please read this page http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/Dell-LCD-Monitor-Flashing-Padlock-Icon/index.htm

Have HP slimline series. Came back from a break.

Try another monitor on it to verify it is the video card that has gone bad. If it does not work with another monitor then that is the likely culprit.

Are Dell monitors not compatible with older HP Pavilion Computer? I tried to connect my HP CPU to a Dell monitor and it will not recognize it at all.

It shouldn't make any difference which monitor you are connecting to any computer. In fact, I am running a 19" HP Flat Panel on my Dell Dimension 2400 right now. It is NOT a wide screen monitor as the Dell built in graphics card will not support the RESOLUTION RATIO required for the wide screen. Check what setting is "native resolution" for your monitor and see if your graphics card will support it. If not, using your old monitor, try different resolution settings. Right click on your desk top, click on properties and that should bring up the display properties box. Try a lower setting as larger settings are the ones that will give you a black screen. It will probably give you a smaller picture on your old monitor, or perhaps smaller or larger icons on the desk top. Accept the new settings, turn off your computer and switch monitors, and turn your computer back on. If you get a picture, but it does not fill the whole screen or the icons seem too large or small, then go back into properties from the desktop and try a different resolution ratio until the picture seems correct.

Montior gone dead ?

The icon you are seeing is the Num Lock indicator. What that means is the computer has probably booted up successfully.

If you have another computer or laptop, hook up your monitor to the other computer to see if you get a display.

If no other computer to try with, try unplugging the monitor and with the power unplugged, press the power button for about 15 seconds.

Reconnect power and make sure the monitor powers on, then connect it to your PC.

Let me know if this helps or if you have additional questions.

In vga mode, my monitor says invalid mode

someone or something ( software, games and even virii can do it ) has reset your video settings to a setting that your monitor does not like. If you are very lucky you might be able to simply reboot the computer and it would come back up with the settings you are used to seeing. That was the simply answer
Now for the more complex answer, Boot into Safe mode. right click on the desktop screen, go to properties and select it.
Hit the ' settings ' tab and check your settings, they should be low around 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 maximum for Safe mode. If they are not what I just mentioned, then place there using the screen resolution slider bar or any equivalent action ( depends on the video software ). Then reboot your computer into Normal mode.
In Normal mode I am sure you screen will look like the words and Icons are to large and you can't fit all your icons onto the desktop, Don't worry. Just right click on the desktop screen again, select properties, and then settings again. Place the slider bar or equivalent to a more reading condition of around 1024 x 768. The actual setting will depend on your preferences and what the monitor will handle, but unless your monitor is very new, don't go far beyond 1024 x 768 else you will run into the same exact situation all over again.

The font size on my HP Pavillion N5445 is too large. When checking the text size, it is already on smallest and is still too large.

Are all fonts too large or just icon fonts?

You could reset the screen to a higher resolution. Please note that everything will appear smaller including webpages and desktop icons.
Click Start\Settings\Control Panel
Then Click Display
When the box opens click Settings
When the new window opens you will see an adjustment called "Screen resolution" and a slider marked 'more' at one end and 'less' at the other.
Most modern monitors are set to 1024 by 768 pixels or above. Try moving your slider to a higher setting then click Apply\Ok
