Question about Sony RDR-HX900 DVD Recorder

8 Answers

Won't play or make DVD's

Well, it's worked great for about 5 years, but now the dvd recorder part doesn't work. I've many different cleaning discs until I found one it would play, but I still get the message -- This disc is unrecordable -- or -- Disc error. If I can't fix this is there an easy way to make discs on my macbook?

I tried to find the lens through the loading door and I also removed the cover of my DVR. I don't see any access to the lens (to clean it) without removing some sort of circuit board. How can I access the lens so I can gently wipe it with some tissue paper?

While I had the cabinet open I blew a lot of dust out of the insides and I can play disc now but it still won't record on brand new media. Could a professional cleaning take care of this? I only care because there are shows on the hard-drive I want to record.

also check whether the motor is spinning...

If you had the recorder for five years and had a lot of use out of it, it's probably time to save the repair bill and get a new one. After five years you may find that they are less expensive and better technology than what you had.

You cannot access your lens. This is designed this way. The only way to clean your lens is with a DVD Lens Cleaner Disc, available form Video Rental Stores for around 12 dollars,

Also, while the tray is open use canned air to blow the compartment out first, wait 20 minutes for the dust to settle and then use the lens cleaner. If this doesn't do the trick, your player may be at the end of usable life; a value known and disclosed in your documentation. This is known as the MTBF or Mean Time Between Failures. It doesn't have to be in-use hours but aging figures into this equation as plastic shrinks and can completely throw off where the read write arm is actually reading at. The sectors on the DVD are incredibly small in size. So any shrinkage in the plastic and it won't read write period.

Lastly, you can go to this forum and database to look up common issues with your Player http://www.videophelp.com/

Worldvet

Sir,

This is not matter about the Dust problem. This problem due to with circuit board. May be some of its IC chip is not working. This problem is solved by authorised service centre only. Better contact service centre for help.

I think your dvd lens power ( a laser light that it emits) has become weak so you need to change it. i think it won't be costlier to change. disc cleaner disk can't do nothing. my advice is to change the lens.

First open your dvd recorder and try to clean the lens manually with the soft tissue paper.do not apply more pressure on the lens just clean it gently.if ur dvd has played 1 disc that means the lens is working fine n just need some cleaning internally.

SOURCE: i have a dvdr3380 lately when i put in disc it says disc unrecord

Test the created DVD with TMPGEnc v4.0 Xpress here is the free trial link It has a read source function that will fail if the DVDR has not been authored correctly.

If this works and scans in the full DVDR then I suggested that you buy a branded DVD+R like Philips who created the format, if this still fails I think you DVDR 3380 will need a service.

If the player skips, make sure that the DVD disc is not dirty or scratched..Use the cleaner disk buy it from R. Shack.
If the tray won't open or close properly, check the belt for dirt or wear. Then check the tray for misalignment. If needed, remove, clean, lubricate, and reinstall the tray following the instructions in the owner's manual.

Trying to record on a DVD-R , after several minutes trying to load i get a msg saying it can neither read nor play this disc , check disc,,please help

I've had this problem with trying to record on CD-Rs also. DVD and CD recorders can be very fussy. You just have to get a piece of dust or a fingerprint on the CD or DVD that's being recorded onto and it gets kicked back as a check disc or blank disc..

Another problem is some recorders will only accept certain brands. I've had problems recording onto a SONY CD-R with a SONY recorder! So, in summing up, try a different brand or make sure the disc is clean. Sometimes just taking the disc out and putting it back in in a different position will make the recorder think it's an OK disc. Hope this helps.

DVD recorder not recording any more

I have found that you get what you pay for in electronics. I bouoght a Cyber Home recorder, it lasted about 15 months before it went out.
I had another off brand ( don't remember name) that also didn't last. I have an older, I think it's a Panasonic, at least 5-6 years old. It won't reord on DVD+R, only on DVD/RW discs.
So, first I say you bought ****.
Buy name brand only it lasts longer.
Second, these things don't last to long.
I have a player only that is 5 + years old that still plays movies.
I haven't used the Panasonic for about a year. I do use it to PLAY movies still.

Dvd recorder can't read disc it previously read

Take the Disc out and put it aside. You must clean the Laser Eye, and clean dust and other matter from inside your recorder. Clean Eye with rubbibg alcohol and q-tip. A regular CD/DVD cleaner disc will not work. After cleaning, reinsert your Disc and Finalize it.
