Suggest download AND install the Audio driver, from the laptop manufacturer's support website.
Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device
The device in question is the Audio chipset. What version of Windows operating system that is used, has not been stated.
I need the laptop manufacturer name; Acer HP Gateway IBM/Lenovo Jack in the Box (NO,.........you gonna' believe that last one? lol!)
I also need the Model Number. This can be found on the Bottom of the laptop. (-> NOT S/N. That is the Serial Number)
I also need to know what Windows operating system you are using. Windows 98 Windows Me Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8
Please post back in a Comment.
Then I can guide you step by step, in downloading AND installing the correct Audio driver.
(I will also guide you in reinstalling the Volume icon, back to your taskbar. The taskbar is at the bottom of the screen. Has the Time in it. The Volume icon is a small speaker icon. Round circle with smaller round circle in the middle )
The software for your version of Lenova Thinkpad drivers and utilities are available free of charge from the Lenova website.
First check the model of your r40e. The link to the drivers which which model to download from is at the bottom of the email.
Locating Your IBM Lenovo Model NumberThe location of the label containing the model number of your machine can be found in various different places, as shown below. You are looking for either the "Type", the P/N (product number), or the Model on the label, do not use the S/N (serial number) information.
ThinkPad - The label can generally be found on the bottom of the machine.
The label typically looks like one of the following pictures:
For this type of label, the TYPE is the Model Number.

Unfortunately the only way to get a recovery for any preloaded system is to contact the manufactuer of the product. IE if the unit is a Compaq you can contact Hewlett-Packard, must be the current company that owns the model and build. Compaq is now part of HP is the only reason for the example.
They will ask your model and serial. new discs may cost you to obtain but serial will give them the preloaded software information.
Outside of recovery discs, secondary option. Purchase a new operating system. expensive but does work as well.
Hope this helps.
