Nuvii 660 shows maps are locked

After upgrading my maps from Australia 2007 to 2008 Garmin would not allow me to purchase an unlock code. Can I return my GPS to the original setting of map 2007. Your help would be appreciated. Thank you

I did a factory restart but this did not work. Get same message 'Can not unlock maps'

I did a factory reset as advised but this did not work. Still get message 'Can not unlock maps'

  • landmk1 Jun 28, 2008

My problem is that I loaded the update 2008 maps but then could not get a unlock key as Garmin has suspended the release of all lock keys until new upgrade comes out in middle of year. Can I take my nuvii 660 back to the 2007 maps that came on the machine when I purchased it. Can I delete the 2008 update.

  • landmk1 Jun 28, 2008

I thought this might have been the answer, I was hoping that I might have been able to delete the upgrade, as communication with Garmin or the Aus Agents is not very satisfactory. I will soldier on. Thank you all for your help. I have learnt quite a bit from you all. Regards

You will have to contact garmin to get the unlock codes. the cost will be negligible as under service charge.

Hi,

It would seem that the error message "Can not unlock maps" is caused by a fault during the file transfer from your PC to the GPS. Other users have this same issue and a discussion centering around this particular fault maybe found here.

If you would recall, the maps were initially already unlocked in Mapsource (in the early stage of the update process) Unlocking them again using the utility in the Mapsource may also cause this glitch.

Alternately, some have found that editing the gmapprom.unl file by deleting the initial letter (U), would make the codes to be 25 characters which should now work. Pls verify that your nuvi is plugged into you PC, thereafter go to "My Computer", click on the nuvi/garmin drive and find the Garmin file and the gmapprom.unl file. Make the changes mentioned above and your maps will unlock.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    heres something you can try

Step 1. Find out your new unlock code:

Run Mapsource on your PC. Choose menu Utiities -> Unlock Maps ... -> Next -> pick "View my installed unlock codes" -> Next -> Click to highlight "City Navigator North America NT v8" -> Click "Properties ..." -> Write down 25 character code (skip dashes)

Step 2. Open gmapprom.unl with Notepad to put correct unlock code:

    - Connect nuvi to your PC with USB cable.
    - Open gmapprom.unl file (which is under Garmin folder on your nuvi) with Notepad
    - Delete all unlock code in this file and replace with the new one you got from step 1 (no dashes or spaces).
    - Hit Enter key right after 25 character unlock code input.
    - Save this file
    - Safely remove USB connection from Windows.
    - Nuvi should boot up automatically.

When trying to put in an address the Garmin asks me for a country and then does not accept it after typing in the first letter. The other functions appear to be ok.

Hello

you need to update your map

Purchase your map updates (if necessary). You can purchase map updates for your Garmin Nuvi from the Garmin website. There are two basic options: a lifetime purchase or a one-time upgrade. The lifetime purchase gives you access to any new updates for the life of your device, while the one-time upgrade will provide you with the latest current maps, but you'll need to purchase again if you want to upgrade again later.

Make sure to log in with your myGarmin account before purchasing the map upgrade.

Connect your Garmin Nuvi to your computer via USB cable.

Open the "myGarmin" website and sign in with your Garmin account. Make sure to sign in with the account that you've purchased the map updates on.

Click the "myMaps" tab on the myGamrin dashboard. This will load a list of all of your purchased map upgrades.

Click the drop-down menu in the "Recent Map Purchases" section. Select your Garmin Nuvi from the list of devices.

Install the Garmin Communicator Plugin when prompted. This is required in order for the Garmin website to transfer the map files to your Gamrin software on your computer.

Download and install Garmin Express. This is the program that allows your computer to interact with your Garmin Nuvi.

Register your device in Garmin Express. If you haven't already registered your device, you'll be prompted to when you start Garmin Express. You'll need to register in order to update the maps.

Click the "Updates" tab in Garmin Express. This will show all of the available updates for your Nuvi, including the new map update you just purchased.

Click the "Show Details" option next to your Map Update. Click the "Install" button that appears. You will need to accept the agreement before the update installs.

Wait for the maps to download and install. Once you agree to the terms, the map update will begin downloading to Garmin Express, and will then be transferred to your Nuvi. This will likely take several minutes to complete.

unplug the Nuvi when the update is complete. The Nuvi will reboot and begin installing the updated software on the device. This may take another couple of minutes.

You can download garmin express here

I have been using the password feature, and there is one issue I have with it. On my NUVII, I only get ONE chance to put in the password. If I mess up that one time, there is no second try. Most systems...

If you are talking about the Garmin Nuvi 660 (and most others), there is no limit on the wrong # of incorrectly entered passwords. If you type in a wrong password and it says "Invalid Password", all you have to do is wait 15 seconds and the screen will clear allowing you to try again.

My child locked my garmin660

there are only three things you can do.
  1. return to the secure location where the password was set and it will unlock
  2. provide proof of purchase and return it to garmin to unlock it.
  3. punish the child untill they tell you the code.
the last was was meant to be funny but hey, you never know what theyll do if you threaten to take away their XBOX 360 ;)

good luck..bill

Unable to unlock new maps

Where did you download the Australian maps from? If from Garmin, contact Garmin for the unlock code. Maps have to be unlocked to a specific unit.

If you downloaded the maps from the internet, you will still need to contact Garmin for an unlock code.

UNLOCK

1. Enter the correct PIN.
2. Go to the secure location where you set the PIN and the unit will not ask you for the PIN.
3. Send the unit back to Garmin to be unlocked.

I have had sucess in unlocking Nuvi's but I will only do it for owners who can prove ownership through a valid sales receipt and proof of ownership through registration through Garmin.

Garmin lock

It is POSSIBLE to unlock this, if someone were to try every possible combination of PIN numbers. However, this is a time consuming process. Most of the time when a unit is stolen, it is sold for a quick profit. It will be a study in frustration to whomever purchases it, as they will be told the only way to unlock the unit is to enter the correct PIN or take it to the location at which the PIN was set. The only other option will be to return the unit to Garmin. IF they do this, IF you have registered it, and IF you have notified Garmin of the theft, you MAY get it back. I would think it would be just a useless device to whomever winds up with it.
