Dell 4700 PC desktop - start up problem, is it a virus?

Hi, I have this start up problem where I have to press my on switch about 5 times before my computer actually starts up. For example, I press on, the computer lights turn on, but the monitor does not show any action. Then I turn the computer off by pressing the same button (hold it down until the computer turns off). I wait ~10 seconds and have to repeat this about 5 times before my computer starts up. Do you think it's a virus? I've been trying McAfee's free virus removal software, Adware, Microsoft update, Symantec Antivirus, Firewall...what else can I do? Am I infected?

Many thanks and best wishes,
Stella Salvo

Hi, my Dell Dimension crt monitor stopped working three days after I bought it. When I try to turn the screen on there is nothing. The computer works fine. I must mention that I use a generator, however. I wonder whether the generator killed my monitor. Should I throw the monitor out as I was told it's about $150-200 to fix and a new LCD is not that much more. Thanks in anticipation, M Lee

First of all you should use only any one antivirus.
actully your problem show any sin of virus in your pc, so just
don't worry about virus. you should check your connection properly or there must be some fault in your cpu wire .

Hi,

I don't think that this is a software (virus) issue. I am more incline to think that it is hardware, either video card, motherboard or power supply. Additionally, it is possible to verify this and specifically which part with the use of a hair dryer. Before powering up the PC, try to remove the side cover and blow hot air into the video card until the card feels reasonably warm (not hot) and power on the PC. Do this with the PSU and the general area of the motherboard near the BIOS chip. If it powers on after the hot air application, then you have just confirmed the cause and which part.

Often this is brought about by damp air or sudden changes in room temperature.

In some instances, this could signify a vital component nearing end of its life.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Dell deminsion 4700 when i moved it,monitor, mouse, keyboard quit.monitor briefly displays power safe mode.pressing any key don't help

When you moved your pc you probably knocked the graphics card loose. You can open it up and try re-seating it. Make sure you unplug the pc first and then press the on button for 10 seconds to clear out all the power from the power supply before opening the computer up.

Also, If you are using a KVM... Unplug the KVM's power cord for 30 seconds and plug it back in. That will reset it.

I recently bought a Dell Dimension 4700 at an auction. I got it home, started it up, but can't get past the administrative password to access the drive's entire memory. any suggestions?

Unless you are comfortable with using software such as Billix, or ERD Commander to set the Administrator password to blank. It would probably be easier to reinstall the OS. It would probably be good to do that anyway, because you don't know what was left on there by the previous owner. Might have Viruses or other nasty stuff.

Hope this helps
