I AM CHANGING THE STARTER SPRAG CLUTCH ON MY 2007 1100 MULTISTRADA.THE PART # CHANGED TO 70140351A AND THE PART HAS A LARGE FLANGE ON ONE SIDE. DOES THE FLANGE FACE OUTWARD ? I HOPE. THANX GARY

the question should have been how in the world do you take apart the flywhee.l the larger flange would make you remove the locktighted 25t bolts out. broke a coulple of expensive snap on 25t sockets. the magnetic flywheel wont like heat. can you give me a clue? have you seen the new sprag? garythe question should have been how in the world do you take apart the flywhee.l the larger flange would make you remove the locktighted 25t bolts out. broke a coulple of expensive snap on 25t sockets. the magnetic flywheel wont like heat. can you give me a clue? have you seen the new sprag? gary

if its the sprag type starter you need to check starter gear to see if it's still in oe piece. If it is then you will need to access the sprag clutch itself which is in the engine. If the starter is the inertia type ( with a solenoid on the side of the starter) then its probably just a sticky pinion assembly. Remove starter from engine and spray the pinion with methylated spirit ,dry it off then spray with graphite lube.
If the starter is spinning but the engine is not cranking, the sprag clutch (a gear that turns only one direction) is either bad or the nut on the end of the crankshaft that holds the sprag assembly is lose. Remove the stater or the cover that holds the sprag assembly and rotate the sprag gear and it should rotate only one direction. Rotate the large sprag gear with a screw driver wedged in the gear and the engine should turn one way an freewheel the other way. Check to make sure that the nut at the end of the crankshaft is tight or it will not turn the crankshaft.
the play in the shaft that your flywheel is causing your issue-you need to find the reason for that 1/2 inch wobble, although the most obvious would probably be a rear main bearing.or a bent (?) crankshaft...ask your rebuilder to double check the bendix gear operation on the starter, but it sounds like your problems are not the starter based on your description.
The rollers can be changed. Low battery will cause this issue and if it happens too often then the rollers wear down and the sprag needs changing. Try a charger like the optimate to keep the battery topped up. The charging system is problematic on them and needs modifications to work corre
Use the black colored wet and dry. With water.About 400 grit.Or finer grit. But use a lubricant.Yes.Throw the sprag. It's a small cost part and you want the newer one.A Duke is a Duke.I have 2 and love them.Hope this helps (nice bike you have)
sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.
