The controller for the turntable is shorted out or welded its contact if its a relay. the door has safety switches that turns off the electrical connection to the turntable and magnetron once you open the door. you can trace the switch that runs the turntable. start from the power supply, goes to the door switch then to the controller before it goes to the turntable motor. i'm sure it has an electrical diagram at the inner wall of the cover.
i hope i was able to help.

The microwave won't stop.

You probably have a bad door switch or door switch mount. See this file.

Turntable usually automatically switch off. If it is continuosly running check the related relay driving circuit.

Whirlpool microwave only cooks for limited time?

It's possible that the module that produces the microwaves is failing. The parts are cheaper but the labor may not so get an estimate before deciding if it's worth repairing or replacing.

Turntable goes around when the door is open and the microwave is off.

Do not run the microwave with the door open. You will be cooked. Sooner or later, if there are enough microwave ovens, (and there are), everything that can go wrong with them will, eventually. There are several interlocking safety systems built into every microwave so that they won't work with the door open. Yours may have failed. I've never come across one, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.
It may only have a fault making the fan and turntable operate, which can sound like it's working with the door open. Either way, get it checked or get a new one.
This assumes that the microwave isn't actually supposed to do what it is doing under normal conditions or current programming. Refer to manual/instructions if unsure.:::Spiceweasel.au

My microwave continues to run, (turntable and exhaust), when the door is opened.

all microwaves have 2 safety switches at least... but these are tied to a set of relays that turn it on, my bet is a sticking or stuck relay because you unplug it right and plug back in its not running?-relay ... if always runs driver transitors.

Microwave Oven Problem

Quite often this is due to a bad door switch. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure. It's probably not actually heating with the door open, but better safe than sorry! If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number (without the suffix) here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
