Question about SmartDisk FireLite 40 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Do you still check this?

I saw your emial in a bulletin board.. i am having trouble with my usb firelite getting powered up and recognized by either computer... sometimes when i wiggle it it lights up...have not been able to get device recognized or anything. I got a new external hard drive today so I am hoping to get everything off the firelight and moved over to the new hard drive.

I have a Smartdisk Firelite USBFLB40-C (lot no: JH5105) that I have been using perfectly well for over 3 years and it now has masses of vital data on it that use for work and home.
Today, when I went to upload a file from it (a CV to a web site) I discovered the drive had not mounted as normal when I booted up (G5 iMac)... I have the Firelite connected except when transferring between machines.
The handbook and on-line support would indicate a power supply issue, but I question this would suddenly occur rather than being an on-going problem from the start.
This device has worked superbly for me since I got it (on any number of different machines of differing vintages and across platforms (Mac OS-X 10.4.11 to Windows - '98SE. 2000 and Vista) without any problem... till now!
I am not technical; I am not an engineer, but would be willing to try taking the unit apart to facilitate a 'fix' if given clear enough instructions involving basic techniques.
Can anybody offer some help in the form of advice before I have to resort to expensive Data Recovery specialists?
    Thank you!

You don't say what you wiggle on drive, this sounds like power port has come adrift from circuitboard or if you have got a friend with the same unit check you power supply on his and if all is ok then try his on yours and see resaults if same resaults then and only then open the unit if your unit is more than 1 yrs old you can open it next check all conections leading in to the unit to hard drive if the power connector to hd is wobbly remove power plug from hdd and use a small opend -ended screwdriver and close the gaps in power plug and plug it back to hdd and try power again to unit if all is well you can close up.

but if same resaults then get your soldering iron out and solder but use a low heat soldering iron and remove circuitboard out you will nee some one to hold the board while you solder the middle pin back as this often come loose during use.
wait for solder to go cold and the board is cold then reconnect all cables to board.
good luck

I Hope this is helpful

When I plug in the usb connection for my smartdisk firelite 30 gb, it is not being recognized by my pc

I am sure tha that you have verified that the FireLite has power and the USB connectors are secure both at the Firelite end and the computer end.

If all that is in good order, then you can follow these instructions.

When you plug in your drive you need to do the following to see if the drive is connecting to the computer.
Right Click on "My Computer"
You will get a menu, chose "Manage"
You will then get a Computer Management window.
On the left side of the window will be a menu.
Under the Storage section, chose "Disk Management"
This will open in the right side of the window and will show you your main hard disk, CD-Rom disks and any other disks connected to your computer.

If you see your Firelite hard drive, then it is connected. The drive may need to be formatted. This window should tell you if that is the case. If you see the firelight and it shows that the disk is unformatted, you can right click over the large section on the lower left window which is located to the right of the smaller area that describes the disk. You will get another menu that will allow you to formate the disk. You can also assign or change the drive letter assigned to the Firelight using that same right click menu.

I hope that you have found these directions helpful. Please contact me if you need clarification on any of the instructions I have written here. If the Firelite is not visible on this Manage Computer Window, then you may have a defect with your Firelite Drive.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank You,

My 40gb smardisk firelite usb connector has broken loose. I have files that i would like to have. There is another ext switch next to usb what is that and is that another way to get my files what type...

The other connector on the USB Firelite is for external power if needed. You will need to buy another 2.5" hard drive enclosure and pull the drive from the firelite and put it in the new one to get the files. Before you buy a new one open the firelite and take the drive with you to verify if it is an ide or sata drive. This will determine the type of enclosure you need. You could also take it to a local computer store and have them back the data up to dvd, but this can get expensive. You can typically get a new 2.5" ide enclosure for under twenty dollars.

Need drivers

Below is the link for the FireLite 160GB portable HD. Drivers are only needed for win98. 2000/xp/vista are plug and play. The manuals are included at this link.

Additionally, there could be a problem with power supply. A switch is on the back...USB or EXT. EXT is for an external supply. ( USB is naturally for a USB cable. Clicking might indicate low power when using USB. Switch to the external adapter or get a USB cable with two connectors for the computer (the extral cable draws more power),

good luck.
