Tip

Limited Connectivity & WiFi issue

make sure there is only 1 pc connected.....
.
reset the line PPPoA/remove the dsl jack (if PPPoE) for 30 secs > delete all wifi profiles > clear the TCP/IP cache by using "netsh winsock reset" at the command prompt (if vista then from accessories right click on the command prompt and run as administrator) > switch off the router > restart the laptop/PC > remove the ETH cable > restart the router > after all LEDs are back ON > connect the ETH cable (and Enable the LAN connection if disabled) > NIC aquires the IP address > the same goes for the wifi adapter > aquires the IP address.
.
Hopefully the connections should work now.

How do I know if my a1620n desktop needs an adapter so I can connect WiFi?

This desktop does not come with a Wifi Card installed. You would need to buy a USB Wifi Adapter for you to be able to connect to a Wifi Network.

Limited access to internet

try going to command prompt, start>all programs>accessories>command prompt and once the command window opens type ipconfig and look for ip address. If you have an address that starts with 169. then type ipconfig /release and wait a few seconds then type ipconfig /renew and then check your ip address again. It should start with 192

Wireless adapter connects at 54mb but drops to 1mb w/any dataload

Usually, a device will renegotiate a slower speed to compensate for interference. slower speeds are sometimes the most reliable. Its possible to change your wifi channels and try to get one that has less interference, and maintain a stronger signal. You might also want to ensure that any cordless phones in your area are NOT on the same frequency range as your router, because as soon as "Old Great Aunt Mildred" calls you or your neighbor, your wifi goes bye bye.
